Engine locked up

I need some advice about my 99 FE501E. I changed the oil the few days ago. I went to start the bike with the e-start, it fired up and idled for 30sec then it died. I then tried starting the bike and while the engine was turning over I herd a clanking noise. The starter motor would run but it was not turning the engine over. I thought something happened to the starter gear like it cracked because I herd metal pieces clacking around as I hit the starter button. I then tried to manually kick the engine over with the kick start but the engine was jammed. I removed the cover to view the starter wheel and the teeth looked ok also the counter gear teeth looked ok. I then removed the counter gear and replaced the cover so I could kick it over with the starter out of the system to see if the engine was still locked up, I cold not kick it over because the engine was still jammed. It seems like a serious problem that would take tearing into the engine to inspect. I don’t know what would have caused this. I am thinking of three options now and need advice on what road to take.

1. I could tear into the engine and rebuild it.
2. find an engine to swap out my broken one with
3. part the bike out

If I took the first option I would want to know if available engine parts are easy to find and not to expensive. The second option I might be waiting a long time until an engine comes along. Third option, I want to know how successful people are in parting out bikes also is there a demand out there for my bike for the parts.

Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks

I would take the head off and have a look down the barrell. After seeing if their is a gremlin in there, then think about ya options. There's no point spending huge bucks on a new engine when it could be a broken skirt on ya piston.

my 2 cents anyway

Ferret, you have a good point. After talking to a friend he mentioned something may have happened to the timing chain causing a valve to interfere with the piston. I will pull the valve cover off and check it out this weekend.

The starter sprag has more than likely grenaded. The broken parts are causing the motor not to turn. This does not have to be a really expensive repair, but since you will need to split the cases you may want to freshen things up. This was a common failure and is usually caused by a backfire while starting or idling.
That's just my guess.....for an additional 25 cents I can consult my crystal ball and get a truly definative answer

i have a 95 fe 501 and my bike did the same exact thing. unfortunately i broke one of the exhaust valves. i could hear it rolling around in the cylinder. it caused quite a bit of damage internally. now i am either trying to find cheap parts or maybe just sell the bike altogether.

welcome chili

thanks taffy

this website is friggin awesome! anyways...i broke my exhaust valve (not to sure on how that happened) and it just got jammed around in the cylinder causing a lot of damage although not quite as much as i expected. my main concern is the cylinder because it has a crack in the wall all the way through to the coolant area part thingy lol. can this be welded and rebored or should i just look for a new cylinder? Most people ive talked to around here wont touch it because either theyve never heard of husaberg or dont want to mess with it because of lack of experience. I would think it would be an easy fix since its a solid cylinder. but i have been known to be wrong from time to time. i have pics but i dont have the web savy to post them. maybe someone could show me?

Hey there Chili,

I've created a gallery for you and added the photos. I've also edited your post to show some thumbs of some of the images. You can find your gallery here. You can add photos to it any time you please.

thanks,

chill

we need the valves out and some close ups of the valve seats. phuq the head - that'll clean up WHATEVER happens! it's the valve seats you're concerned about ok?

the linear is toast but another may not be that expensive. you need to find out if your old engine shares the same linears as modern.

right now on ebay europe there's a piston and linear of 100mm which would givce you a CC of about 530 i guess.

the piston, if you really want to save money should clean up but the rings should be replaced whatever else happens.

see, it's getting cheaper by the hour!

Hello chilliroaster,

I have good and bad news.

The bad news is that just replacing and repairing the damaged parts in the pictures would cost about $1500 US, my wet finger estimate. This does not include disassembly or reassembly labor. That is close to the replacement cost for a 98-99 model.

The good news is that there are used engines available that should fit your frame for a lot less.

Try HMS Motorsports. They carry used parts.

Husaberg makes use of a two piece "Friction Welded" exhaust valve.
On occasion said valves fail, hence one piece Stainless Steel replacements.

Guides and springs differ from that of late model engines as do the overall valve lengths.

For what it may be worth I have two 30 mm exhaust valves up for bid on Ebay:

Hope this helps.
