Good Gentlemen of the UHE

I take a publication called Moto Tech a bi-monthly technical magazine on motorcycles. In the current Jan/Feb issue appeared an article on engine balancing. It is quite thorough I don’t necessarily agree with everything the article says but none the less it is very good. I know this point has been discussed in these forums from time to time and thought you might like a look. NB – I do not have the publishers permission to put the image up and will delete if I get any complaints, but there is a picture of a sectioned Husaberg in the article so I figured we had a right to it. You’ll probably have to save the .jpg’s and zoom in on your computer screens.

Also in my gallery some new JBS products questions welcome. A new website is coming, eventually.

I am sorry about the poor quality of the scanned images, it was the best my scanner would do the A3 pages at a deffinition that allowed the pictures to be a reasonable size for saving to the UHE gallery. I will try to put a better version on my server and put a link to it on the post here.

When the mag popped through my letterbox, I looked at the picture on the front cover and thought it was a bit familair. As you say, lo and behold it's the berg engine :)

I haven't read the article yet but I have had a copy of Tony Foale's engine balance software installed on my computer for some time and it's very useful.

Have just added some more pics of the machined oil cooler, some case machining to take a 108mm piston, a Potjie (very tasty) and a junior racer 10 days old.

I sat down and read the article last night. Thought it was a good article (that seems like it will be continued in more depth). I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, particularl yht ebits you disagree with and your point of view.

Was it in regard to a rocking couple still being caused by the Husaberg balancer or something else?

Some years ago I was into rebalancing thumpers equipped with counter balancer. I did a couple of simulations with a software called "Working Model" and adjusted both cranks and CB´s, up/down in weight. Very interesting subject, possibly because it is virtually impossible the calculate how the real result will be! :) What simulation softwares are good these days?

BTW: From my simulations I found that to minimize vibrations from a thumper, you´ll need two CB´s running twice the speed of the crank. Talk about a solution that will/should, never leave the design stadium! :D

Hey Mats,

I haven't the budget to buy all these fancy simulation software tools :D The only tool I therefore have is the simple balancing software that Tony Foale has available on his web site - http://www.tonyfoale.com/ . It's the one used to show the graphs in the article Ben Ballard uploaded. Tony has a load of other very nice bits of software for chassis design etc.

Other simple stuff, I've historically made simple tools myself.

That would certainly be an interesting modification to a 650 engine :D
