electrical (12V into kill circuit stops spark?)

A wire came off the ignition switch while I was riding. I some how crossed the kill switch with the hot. Tried to start it and did damage. All it does now is crank. I now for sure I fried the starter switch. The plug is not sparking and I'm not getting the correct readings from the stator. Can anyone give some guidance on what could be the problem? My bike is a 96' fe400. Thanks, Mayor

Not sure exactly what happens in the CDI if you try to connect the kill wire to 12V, but I suspect there could be some input circuit components inside the CDI that have fried. It is unlikely that connecting 12V to the kill wire would hurt the stator, but then you mention incorrect stator readings. Are these resistance readings or voltage with the CDI connected?

If you unplug the orange wire completely from the CDI do you get any spark? If so the problem is simply in the kill switch circuit. :) If no spark the CDI/coil is likely dead.

I have a 98 fe 600 in tassie i had the same trouble with wire coming off key switch shorted them out putting back. i put a new stator&flywheel on and still no spark, so i will have to buy an ignition module

when you get it all back together be sure to fit a fuse in the system somewhere. it'll save you the trouble next time!

If the kill input on the CDI can be blown by applying 12V, a fuse is unlikely to save the CDI if it happens again. The CDI components would blow way ahead of any fuse.

Adding an exta fuse also introduces something else to go wrong.
