ok here we go looking for ideas ,
starter motor was just spinning round and not picking up drive .so i replaced the free wheel clutch thingy.
now the starter is picking up the engine but wont turn it over. ? unless i pull in the decompression lever then it turns over quite well.
i have had the cover off in the past and the auto decomp wieght was sticking on the cam bearings ( after engine rebuild ) but i free it off did check valve clearences seemed ok
timing been checked .
bike starts first kick every time.would just like it to start on the button as im looking at swapping it.
dont know wot else to check?
it used to start fine

Are you trying dead cold?

Have you tried with the two battery setting?

Currently having the same issue as you did, I think I may remove the starter and replace the battery with a slimmer one just to power my DC items.

If it turns the engine over when you pull the manual decomp then I suggest your valves are looser than 0.004" or your cam shaft decomp is worn.

I would check the valves first and make then a tight 0.004".

If that doesn't work then I would just continue to use the manual decomp to help it start. This is not a sin, just convenient. The real solution is to install a later model cam mounted decomp which means some work for you or a bill at the bike shop.

Your choice.

Joe

can the motor tyre

i.e slower revolutions? lost power to turn over engine?
reset tappets still no better wont turn over motor without pulling in decomp
and even then doesnt start yet starts first kick

How Have You Set The Tappets? With A Feeler Or The 1/8th Method. I Tried The 1/8th Method And It Didnt Work For Me As Both Screws On The Inlets Had A Very Nasty Tight Spots. Ended Up Buying The Motion Pro Feeler And Setting Up The Tappets That Way. Starter Worked Much Faster Afterwards.
