Early model e-start peculiarities

I just picked up a non-running 1998 FE600 to use as a parts bike for my 97 but will see if I can get it going first as it may turn out to be a decent bike.

My question is the differences in the sound of the e-start of my 97 and new to me 98.

The 97 cranks real good and if the kill switch is in the off position will continue to rotate past TDC (freewheel) nicely when you let off the button. But on the 98 as soon as you stop cranking the piston seems to stop exactly where is was when you let go of the start button. Additionally the starter sounds kind of tight to me as the whine of it is of a higher pitch. Is this normal for a 98 or is something worn. The sprag is O.K. I think as there is no slippage.

decomp not working?

drop a compresssion test on it perhaps?

swap batteries just to even it up a bit?

The starters on so powerful on these oldies that it doesn't even matter if the decomp is working. You can kick the beast through but its like mud (these don't have the kickstart activated decomp) which tells me that the auto decomp is working somewhat or compression is bad. But both of those issues should not produce the "sticking" I think. The higher pitch wine of the starter has me perplexed. Wining and sticiking. Gotta be related I think.

Could the sprag not be releasing properly?

in that case it sounds like the starter is just about all-in?

again, a swop is all i can recommend. i really don't know that model well enough.

Hey Husabutt! I have a 98 myself, would be interested in what you find out and your carb settings. E-start seems very tempermental and hope to sort that out this spring. I would like to compare the carb settings and see how close they are. I do feel the high pitch whine is normal as mine sounds the same.

I'll jot down the carb settings when I clean it out. Perhaps you can elaborate on how its tempermental. I was a bit surprised at how weird the e-start is acting on the 98 compared to my 97 which e-starts perfectly (so far). Of course this parts bike looks like it has been flogged pretty good and maintenence slim to none. Taffy's ideas are sound. It just may be a simple as the starter motor.

The beast as it appeared on E-Bay.
The steering dampener was a nice bonus.

Well Taff the older big bore e-start models are heavy, low to the ground, a little cramped, turn slow, have mushy suspension, won't leave the ground more than a few inches and tend to plow through things instead of steering around them or jumping over them but they do one thing incredibly well, blasting down miles of wide open desert sand washes of which we have many. Nothing can touch a 600cc Berg except maybe a 650 Berg. They are quite stable with their almost chopper like raked out front end and the torque produced is amazing. A newer model will demand a near death grip on the bars and exact seating position in the sand which gets tiring but not with the old lead sleds. Just sit down wick the throttle and roost. These things are stable and would probably be great with a paddle tire at the dunes.

With four Bergs now I think that I qualify as a Bona Fide Husaberg nut job :)

I also have a '98 FX600 and it whines a bit when starting, but not too much different than the other early bergs I've had. you are fortunate to get a complete parts bike, especially since all of the parts are interchangeable in those years. Good find.

Went through the carb today. Here are the settings:

Main 170
Needle K51
Atomizer (aka needle seat) 270 DR
Pilot 40
Choke 45
Slide 40

Forgot to check if it is fitted with the optional emulsion tube that goes under the pilot jet.
Before I remount the carb I'll check and see if its got one.

It appears like the reason the previous owner stated that it just stopped running was a piece of carbon stuck in the electrode gap.

Have you had it running & is the sprag clutch disengaging OK or is it locked? If you pull the starter intermediate gear out does it kick OK?

My sprag locked once & it sounded like you describe when you cranked it. I pulled the intermediate gear & went for the ride anyway. When I got back put the gear back in & it worked OK again. Still working 2 years later.....

I didn't think there was any difference in the starter between '97 & '98.

Hey Husabutt, thanks for the settings. looks like they are about the same except I have a 45 pilot jet, I was running rich and lowered the clip to where Dale said it should be and have to put a little time on it to see if it works out. I will try the 40 pilot down the road to see if it changes anything. My e-start spins pretty well, just doesn't seem to be enough to fire it. I have been playing with the timing a bit, my plan now is to pull the motor inspect the top end and go from there.Any advice you got for me would be great! Looks like we had the same guy put the kickstand on!
98 FE 600

Continued taking it apart and cleaning things this weekend. Nothing unusual in the left side cover. Pulled the rocker cover, seems O.K., then went to spin the flywheel with a socket/ratchet and the whole motor is very hard to spin. I can hear a clicking type of sound and simultaneously the wires coming out of the stator are moving in and out. I didn't have time to pull the flywheel so next weekend we will see what the heck is going on behind the flywheel.

Well I found the source of some of the engine drag this weekend. When I pulled the starter gear cover I found three allen screws floating between the cover and gear. I can't see where these screws came from and how they could get there. There in not enough room between the gear and the case for them to work there way there from the inside of the motor. The three screws are the exact same size as the ones that hold the cover on. IF someone was wanting to sabotage a Berg this would certainly do it. As soon as one of the screws caught a gear tooth it probably would have sounded like an explosion. Perhaps someone wanted to insure that this bike remained a parts bike and would not be repaired.

Hi guys,

I've just get a almost brand new 98 model, FE600 e-starter (elduro) and I'd like to ask all of you about e-starter.
Mine spins well....but....starting from cold, it is almost impossible to starting by electrick so I have to start runinng by kicking no more than 3/4 times.

I noticed that after just start running, if I turnchoke lever to ON ...engine stops...so in my bike the only way to getting started by kick or electrick, it is turning chokelever to OFF (default position in fact).

Do you know what could be happening in my bike?

Thanks a lot friends.

hello and welcome to UHE ny friend. matbe we can have a photo of the 600? to see a beautiful 600 look at 'husabett's' or 'dezduster's'.

your bike is older and so many parts have worn on it. the carburettor is the first place to look. go to the doc and carburation. at the bottom is carburettor chapter and at the bottom of that is dell orto and how to check for wear in the atomizer and needle.

these are possibly your problem!

Taffy

Hi Taffy, of course I can upload some pics from my bike...I just need to findput howto..let me investigate...

Regarding my question, yes you are rigth about carburator, i think so too. I have owners manual so all i have to do is a quick study about how to strip down fuel tank and same other pieces just to reach it.

Once I get it...I'll try to check my dellorto 40.

BR friends !!

PD-Pics taken from original advertisment...just before buy it.
