E starting!!?

Hello all! I'm new here so go gentle with me!

I have a 400FE 2000. I also have a very sore leg from kick starting!
Thanks to your various posts I see that the E start on these models are fairly bad.
My questions are;
1/ What do I have to do to get it starting on the E start?
2/ If I need new parts, where do I get them from?

On another note the bike is out of action at the moment as I can't seem to get a spark. The battery (which is new) doesn't seem to charge enough. I'm thinking maybe the Stator is in need of a sorting. Am I right?

Thanks.

Welcome Tris.
You may want to start by going to the downloads section and downloading the "hard start guide"
It should have most of the info your looking for.

The e-start is actually a RE-Start especially on the older models, kick it when cold, button when hot. when it is tuned correctly, the kick will fire it up easily.

Re: RE: E starting!!?

Hi tris,

Have the resistance checked on the stator
Black to red 3000 Ohms +- 10%
Black to Green 165 + - !0%

Regards

Sparks.

The 00 has an electric start not a restarter that was brought in on the 01 model the 99 and 00 e start is very competent i could count the number of times i have kick started my bike.
I would be checking you main power cables and there connections that is of course if you know the battery is good .
If that fails you could possibly have a failing starter motor as my bike cranks over quite rapidly with a freshly charged battery.
Some places to look anyway.

cheers doug

When I got my bike, it had a new battery but it was the wrong battery with not enough cranking amps; you need to have the Yuasa YTZ-7S (don't know if it fit your bike?). Tri-state battery has good prices on those.
