E-Starter gear

Hi,

It appears that the sprague thingy in my 03 650 is dying, as the e-starter keeps slipping.
I tried to find the part (code 250 245-01) along with a bearing, but it appears that nobody stocks it any more. Instead all shops are now selling the newer part, which as is mentioned numerous times in this forum, will not work properly with the rest of the '03 starter gear system.

Any comments on this? Should I buy all the new parts mentioned in the owner's doc section as a set?

Thank you
Nikos

there have been several threads lately about starter slipping issues. peruse the appropriate forums for subjects about the sprague rebuild and torque limiter problems/ solutions.

we had a thread on how to save your sprague bearing by simply shortening the external spring. i tried this and had real problems getting the spring to divide. i then made a mess of it but if you look carefully you can see the joining point. i took 15mm out.

the second thing is to firt the latest decomp arm which is brilliant. you may not need to upgrade anything if you get these two right! we need feedback on this one if you could so do report back.

well, seems i've got no choice but to fit the new part. i'll have a look for the threads you mentioned and will report back when i'm done with the job, which may take some time..

Thanks

Hehe, will do when i get in touch with him again.

BTW, I didn't take note of which way the sprague was originally fitted. There is an arrow on it, do we know if it should be pointing clockwise/anti-clockwise?

Thanks
Nikos

anti clockwise but as you go just check by turning the engine. easy to go forwards and a sod to go backwards.

regards
