my starter is not engaging when the button is pushed. I can hear the relay click every time. i noticed it has been getting finicky about engaging but now nothing. Starts right up when starter does engage. Battery bought new last summer and on trickle charge all winter, fully charged now. I am going to try running a heavier wire tomorrow, but I was just wondering if that doesn't help should I look at the starter or the relay next? Its on a 99 fe400e,i guess it has a 2000 relay on it. an oval gold unit mounted in a rubber mount on the right side under seat, not the automotive style of the previous years. It has been finicky about engaging on the button since i have had the bike appox. 3 years. Just looking for suggestions.

if you have a voltmeter, measure hot to ground on the battery side of your solenoid. then do the starter side and hit the button. should be the same before the starter engages and starts drawing it down. if its zero volts or thereabouts, your solenoid has a problem and you need to look at supplied voltage to the small hot wire going to it. with your meter lead on the positive and the neg on ground, pushing the button should give you 12v. if it does, measure the resistance thru that lead to ground. not sure what number you will see, but it should not be an open circuit.
i'm guessing dirty connection at ground or your starter brushes are shot
