E-Start hell!!!

Hi all, I have another Berg E-starting question.

I have done lots of searching on the site, have tried lots but still can’t really find exactly what I am looking for to solve my problem, and am at the end of my rope.
I have a 05 450fe @120hrs and from day one the thing has really labored (to say the least) to E-start. I always kick when cold, have had 2 batteries, several valve adjustments done (the valve adjustments marginally improve things for a few rides) and also keep the bike on a smart charger when not in use. I have also un-hooked the manual de-comp when doing an adjustment. (I read that on a post here). When the bike is hot I can usually get a start or 2 outta it, but if it doesn’t start the first time or two, then that is it and I am kicking. Fluttering the Manual decomp when using the button seems to help it start about 50% of the time if the battery isnt toast by then. If the bike is on its side or cools down, then forget the e-start, kicking for sure. It feels to me as the battery has lots of power but is working against the motor to turn it over well enough to start. I am pretty close to taking the starter and battery out as the bike usually starts within a kick or two, and just looking for any last minute miracles. One thing I have searched for is if the auto de-comp from 06-07 is any better and/or if this is adaptable to an 05.

Thanks for any advise, hope I am not repeating things form other posts too much.

An 05 Fe450 should e-start with no problems, in fact I have never kick started mine so far. Even when the valves start getting tight it makes no difference. It sounds to me like the autdecompression system is not working at all. I would take the rocker cover off and examine the autodecompression device spring. If it is not installed properly the system is effectively shut down. This was the case on my 01 470. Here's a photo:

The device should always be on due to the spring tension and once the motor starts centrifical force keeps it from decompressing. It is possible the spring is installed incorrectly, missing, broken or possibly the decompression device was left out of the motor. Did you purchase the bike new?

I uploaded the attached e-start checklist to the uploads section quite some time ago, but it doesn't seem to be there. Try going through the set-up procedure to identify where the problem might be.

Hope it helps,
Simon

Thanks for the responses guys. Husabutt, yes I bought the bike new in 05. It never seemed right, right from the get go.
Simon, thanks for that checklist, I will go through it and see what I can find....Gonna have it serviced shortly and will bring up all the things I can..

Fingers crossed...

Since you purchased the bike new and if the dealer remembers the complaint right from the begining I think this should be covered under warranty. Thats the route I would take. My 05 450 starts so easy and has never run the battery down even with near constant starts and stops during large group rides with lots of kids (you can imagine). I do keep it pluged into a charger between rides. The fact that it runs down a fully charged battery in a couple of starts screams autodecompression issue.

I can't seem to be able to download the attachment. Anybody else?

When the plugs out does it labour or run down the battery or does it turn over OK ?
