Hi Guys I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this one. I did a dyno run with my 550 yesterday and the numbers a quite low, only 38.5 hp. I was expecting around 48 to 50 hp. Their was one thing that I think wasn't going in my favor was that I have a full knobby rear tire and trying to test in 3rd gear the bike would spin so I had to put it in 4th gear.Could this be the reason for the low number or do you think it's just the dyno? Any input would be appreciated thanks.

i believe a knobbly is worth 3-4bhp. so that doesn't really explain it. i have had 38hp out of my tunes 400 years ago. i think i still have a graph in my gallery of it.

regards

Taffy

Hi kamikaze,
Dyno numbers represent so many variables they are best used as a comparitive tool. How were the numbers form other bikes .
I have a customer who vintage races a Yam XS650, the dyno in New hampshire I speedway read 62 and the Cdn national superbike dyno read 44...same bike.
Operating a dyno for best and most realistic results is not so easy, lots of Dyno operator experience is benificial.

Thanks for the reply guys.
There were only 3 bikes that ran, mine and 2 xr 650 l's. One of them had a stage 1 hot cam, a high compression piston and had sm wheels on it... he had a reading of 42.5 hp. His bike wouldn't spin the dyno up in 4th gear so he did his run in 3rd.
I suspected that his bike would have more power than mine with the engine work but his number wasn't all that great either.
The torque numbers were quite close, with mine at 29 ft lbs and his at 30 ft lbs.
Just a little disappointing not getting accurate numbers when I know that the bike makes a lot more power than that.

Here is a quick pic.

It was amazing how fast the Berg spooled up compared to the others.
It actually scared the sh!t out of one of the lads there.

From what I have been told by the guy I used to Dyno my bike is every Dyno is different, they are just a tuning tool, basically he recommended to look at the percentage gains using the Dyno, the HP is only a guide.
Also the HP noted elsewhere for the 550's of values around 50HP is crankshaft HP, what you are getting from the Dyno is rear wheel HP, true Hp to the ground.

My stock 550 started at 37 HP, after the tuner rejetted it and slightly opened the end cap of the muffler it went to 41.7 HP and the power was so much smoother

Please post up a copy of your dyno graphs, if you have a copy.

HP, Torque and the Air/Fuel ratio graphical results please.

The max HP number is nice to know but much more useful tuning info can be seen in the other dyno results over the full rpm range.

Unfortunately the O2 sensor wasn't working so I didn't get to see what the air/fuel mixture was.

I will try this dyno again someday when the O2 sensor is working and when I have on a different back tire.( preferably a SM wheel and tire)

Dear kamikaze. If the 550 doesnt make you feel like a hooligan, or put the biggest freakin smile on your face ever, kudos. You are well above most earthlings. Dynos are gay. They are okay for loading something up for test purposes , and thats about it. Everything else on the "dyno" (numbers) are adjustable. My dyno, the seat of my pants, says FE550 pins the funometer.
