Hiya,
I was commuting on my DR-Z last winter. Got a pair of Trelleborg Army Special a.k.a. Mitas XT-644 tyres studded with car studs. Worked REALLY well. Turns out I really like these tires in general for what I'm doing - lots of pavement riding and then highly variable offroad conditions.
I was wondering if anyone had tried these on a Husaberg? I'm sure they work as well as on the DR-Z, but I'm curious if anyone has stories. From searching for information on these, they are not good for bikes any heavier than the DR-Z, the heavier BMW adventure bikes will shred the knobs, for example.
For knobbies, they wear incredibly well - I think I did 1500-2000km on pavement last winter. The front is basically intact and the rear is only slightly rounded on the center knobs. I think they'll last for at least one winter more, probably two. People in my area tell me that I can expect 8000km out of them. Weren't expensive to begin with. They're GREAT on gravel, very fine on pavement - smooth and predictable once you get used to the tall knobs flexing under you in turns - and they'll do snow, mud, sand, everything. The perfect dual-sport tyre IMO.
The only mild drawbacks to them are that they are a little heavy - you feel it when riding ... and the sidewall is stiff - you need every trick in the book to get them off or on, and I wouldn't want to do it alone. But it can be done, even trailside.
