Drive chain for 2010 FE450

Sorry if this has been asked before but while I can see things that suggest an answer I couldn't find anything definite (be gentle with me - only had the bike since last Saturday).

Can you fit a normal X-ring chain (e.g. DID 520VX) to the 2010 FE450? I ask because the chain supplied with the bike to fit with the larger sprocket is a 520VT2 which I'd never heard of but Google tells me it's a narrow T-ring chain designed so you can use it on bikes which are meant to use non O-ring chains. Does this mean a normal O-ring/X-ring chain would be too wide and would hit something? My previous Husky was designed to use O-ring chains but they would still noisily hit the frame in places and take lumps out of it - I don't want to go there again!

Also, I've just fitted a stealth rear sprocket and the rivets which hold the steel outer section on are hitting the chain guide at the rear. Is this normal, and is it worth grinding out a path in the chain guide for the rivets to pass through? I guess they would wear out a path themselves eventually. but they're currently making a real thud when they hit it as I turn the wheel by hand and I'm not sure I'd want to ride it like that.

Thanks for any help guys.

i just got a normal 520 o-ring on mine havent noticed anything getting smacked.

as for the stealth sprocket i know when they first started making them they designed it with the rivets too pround and some people had issues doing what you described but that was years ago and they redesigned them.

id probably run the chain guide without the metal cage if you can, havent looked at my '09 to see if it can be done, used to run my '06 like that and never had a problem and just buy a different sprocket next time or send it back and swap it for another type / make at the shop would probably be the best all round solution.

I run the gnarliest RK O ring chain you can get, can't remember the number at the moment, but it is wide, and there is no clearance problems with it. It's a chain that can be used on a 750cc street bike, they last forever.

How many pins do you have on your chain? And how close is the rear tire to the shock flap?

Also, I run the TM Designs lower chain guide and swing arm slider, it is much quieter than the stockers. I highly recommend the bullet proof designs swing arm guide as well.

As far your stock guide goes, might as well take a dremel to it and relieve the area where the pins are hitting, no sense in it letting it gnaw it's way through.

Good to know it should be ok with a wider chain, thanks. I was curious because I have a spare 520VX chain but funnily enough a friend borrowed it to see whether it would fit on his bike and hasn't got around to returning it yet so I couldn't just try it to see how it would fit. Also it wasn't obvious just by looking that there would be a problem with the Husky until you actually rode the bike for a while and found lumps being taken out of the frame.

I noticed the rivets catching the chain guide before I'd refitted the chain, and it happened with the axle anywhere in the front 2/3 of the available range (the further forward the worse it got of course). With the axle right at the back it was ok, but I didn't want to run with it that far back as there'd be so little room for adjustment when the chain wears, so I was planning to take a link out of the chain. The Dremel has now done it's work, and the sprocket turns as smooth as silk!

As time and funds allow I'll be looking at things like BPD/TM extras so I may be running a different chain guide before this one needs replacing - hopefully whatever I end up running won't have the same problem with the rivets, but its interesting about the Stealth sprockets having been redesigned. Makes me wonder if I got an old one - I'll see if there's a date on the packaging anywhere, and if I ever get another one I'll be looking at the rivets before I buy.

Thanks for the replies.
