It was still running fine and i also found 1 of the valve followers inside the cover so im sure that has a big part of the problem,.........Paul

I hate it when that happens!! Could have been worse. rocker roller or a loose adjuster nut.

a mere flesh wound you tart!

get on with it! and next time stay on top of the job BEFORE it bites your arse!

still could have been worse.

mere flesh wound you tart! You know ppl ask for assistance because they dont know something or dont under stand it .but i know enough that you dont get a F ing hole in a eng cover because the eng fells like it ..im sure something failed so im asking what and why...I dont give a rats *** that i have replace the cover ,my concern is why do 2 of the valve washers on the top have cracks in them.>>>>>>>>>.Paul

as berger is trying to tell you, your problem is either the adjuster locknut came loose and went thru the roof or the roller bearing blew. most money is on the adjuster nut. your pics did not show the under side of the cover, but if you pull the two inspection caps, you will prolly see the missing culprit. find the part inside the engine, retrieve it, inspect all the bearings and moving parts, replace whats worn, slap some aluminum shhet over the hole, slather j-b weld or an equivalent that's available whever you live, reassemble and ride :D
why do 2 of the valve washers on the top have cracks in them
i am not clear on what you are saying here

What i did find for brpken parts is the little wobbly thing that you fit thr feeler guage between and the top of the valve to adj. the valves which is part of the adj. screw.that piece broke off which i found...and the the comment about""im not clear on what your saying"" the 2 valve washers on the shifter side of the eng. both have a complete crack or partial cracks, wear as the 2 on the brake side dont have any cracks. This is the concern i have .mostly the rest of the issues is fine ...sort of butif the valve washers need to be dealt with i would rather do it now instead of a quick fix with the adj. nut and have a huge failure soon.so all i was asking is why would the valve washer on the top crack....so im kinda waiting for some sort of a reason why,so i can move fwd and start to take the head off .and my other question is is there a cam change that will boost what the FC motor cranks out,if im taking the head off i would change the cam.I found the piece of head cover so the hole to fix with JB weld wont be so big or just replace the head cover if the $$$$$$$$$$ isnt so high. Thanks for your paitience.................Paul

Good question on the valve retainers being cracked. Unless you see signs of impact I don;t have an answer for you.
As far as the cam goes you should probably leave that one in and go with a dual valve spring set up (taffy can sell you that). You might as well pull the head and check the valves. Throw a new timing chain on it while you are there.
The cam profiles are some what aggressive to begin with, thus causing valve train issues.

i was pulling your pisser my old mucker! i forgot that sometimes 'others' have no sense of irony or sick humour....

you normally see that hole when the roller bearing on the end of the rocker gets so worn that it breaks off and smashes a hole in the top of the cover. it would appear a tappet locknut came off and made it's way towards the middle of the head before breaking a hole in EXACTLY the same place as the 'normal' problem. so please double check that i'm not right. are these cracked valve caps we are on about when we say 'washers'?

and BTW paul, simply describe the bike how you would sit on it as the 'left' or the 'right'. here in the UK we don't use those terms when talking amongst ourselves. we have an ancient dialect passed down by the druids and first used 452BC about a mile south of camberley in surrey. ancient cave wall paintings show the first use of the words 'nearside' and 'offside'.

i won't go there.....

This happened to me exactly. Only this was the SECOND time i punched a hole in the top. First was from the worn roller, the second time was from the locknut working loose and bouncing around before flying straight out the top of the motor, in exactly the same place no less.

Sorry if it's mentioned above, but what year/size motor is this from? I've got an extra 2001 cover from a 400 if it'll work for you! PM me.

OK i get it now .Thats sick humor,we have a place called Surrey as well ,well know nearly world wide for easy girls...what does a surrey mom do first thing in the morning
are these cracked valve caps we are on about when we say 'washers'?
yes that is the name for the parts im trying to describe and after i took the rocker arms out today i can see impact marks from the tappet nut cam off ...the screw and locking nut are still in the proper gap for the valves.I hope my joke doesnt offend anyone here ,if so i do appologize, anyone has a wife from Surrey UK.The roller side of the rockers show no signs of damage.SO should i pull the head off .I know with air pressure on a car you can change out valve seals w/o pulling the head aslong as the psi is enough and w/o excessive leaks from the valves...heres the punch line....They check the time by opening the car door....Paul
