DOES A 650 CDI work in a 600

My CDI ignition module died recently in my 600fe and the best I can find that I can afford for now is CDI out of a 650. Will the mapping in this module be near enough for my 600.

Hello Aussi,

I have never heard of a SEMs CDI failing, but the SEMs stators CDI charging windings fail all the time. Are you sure its the CDI! If you have no spark it could be the stator.

Here is how to check the stator:

Unplug the connector between the stator pigtail and the CDI pigtail. Measure the stator pigtail Red - Black DC resistance, it should be 3000 + - 300 ohms. Green - Black should be 260 + - 26 ohms.

Measure the AC voltage on the Red-Black while kicking the bike over like you do when starting it. Voltage should be 30-35 VAC, anything less than 25 VAC will not start. Same thing with Red-Black, voltage should be ~3 VAC.

The 01-03 650 mapping should be close enough to the 600 to work, give it a try.

Regards,

Joe

Woops, I forgot to ask you what year your 600 is. The values I gave you for the stator are for the 99-03 models. The 650 CDI module will only work on the 99-03 model SEMs stators.

The earlier stators 89-98 had different windings and the CDIs on them were different also.

i was ready to say that these readings are from 99-03 bergs e.t.c
but then i read the woops...... correction of yours joe :D :D

a really never ending subject

p.s. i made a simple electronic circuit as a replacement for the charging coil....works on the bench...will test it on the bike and see.
crossing fingers :)
