Do I have to break the cam chain to change the cam and remove the head on my 01 650. Previous owner just had it changed. I don't want to fix what's not broken

In my experience 90-100% of camchains have a soft link and yes you will have to break the chain to remove the cam.
I thoroughly recommend split links because you can fit and refit the cam chain and a link gets old as the cam chain gets old. just how it should be.
