My son has this 02 400 which he says "I ride it every day and love it".
I'm aware that during some years, the stroke was the same as the 470's. I thought someone told me, when I was looking at a 501, that "you can just change cylinders and piston and change the displacement". So the question is..
Can I just bolt a 470 cylinder and piston onto his 02' 400?
Thanks..

Hi Jmumme,
The 400 and 470 do share a common lower end, however, the cylinder-head is quite different between the two. In theory you could increase the bore size to that of the 470 (100mm), unfortunately the compression ratio would prove excessive and peak power limited as a result of the OEM 400 head.

Note:
The 400 provides an exceptional foundation for a 450 albeit quite expensive.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
Dale

I think what you want to do is use the piston, cylinder, and cylinder head from a 470 with a blown bottom end. That should be a pretty basic exercise in parts swapping.

cody has an engine he is 'swapping out' in the classifieds. he wants $1,500 dollars. you could get that down and then sell yours. the difference in cost would be minimal compared to doing all the work yourself.
