Dirt Rider Internet Bikes shootout 2007?

What if we sent a bike next year? (If there is such a shootout next year).

We could finance it through donations (like we finance the site) and sponsorship (I already know of a suspension shop who could help).

A good bike with a few "necessary" trick parts and overall common sense and good taste (no uber-bling bike like that DRZ 475 or whatever).

What bike would we send and what parts?

Please do go crazy and fantacize.

I was think about an FE 496cc with autoclutch (Rev Loc or Rekluse), odometer, BOSS rad guards, Lineaweaver-tuned carb, Enzo subtanks, Joe Racer oil coolers, a few bolt-on guards, stock gas tank and stock exhaust, resulting in the lightest and least loud bike of the group.

I would go with this.

FE550
Rad Gaurds
Skid Plate
Dicks Racing Suspension
Lineaweaver Carb Setup
GPR Stabalizer

I could provide the official DR quote for the build, see my bigbob quote on page 64 for the DRZ 475TT :D

but seriously, who has money to buy a $8k bike and build it for such a shoot out?

if the site does it, Fe650e is my vote. make it the desert champ bike, if you get a big tank on it.

Yeah, we saw the BigBob pencil-free quote

I have my bigbob Husaberg pocket protector valve adjustment kit. such is the price of fame.

"the 07 FE650e super desert Berg......and it doubles as a great pencil disposal recycling unit too"

BMG could loan a bike for the cause, and then use it as a demo bike for themselves afterwards. I think unklemoose's idea is really good, but in addition, special focus should be given to try and make the bike quieter. I believe that is one of the big tickets. We read how the thumpertalk wienies were ripped up on for that loud bike. Great handling, power, reliability, and quietness.

I agree with you, the TT folks got screwed on two accounts: 1- by picking a DRZ (the reason being because the DRZ forum is the most active) and 2- by spending so much on parts, most of them useless.

The idea was to prove to the world that the DRZ could be turned into a rideable bike by spending a fortune in performance parts. $19,000? GMAB!

They even failed at that, since it failed the sound test. Apparently the DRZ folks are still in the "loud = good" mentality.

The parts & tuning budget should not be more than 50% of the price of the bike new.

I think a 496 with Dicks Racing and some hand guards should be fine!
I think the 496 might have large appeal as most people would find that the torque would be more useful than the high revving 450s
