DIRT IN WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE??

so i got 10 hours on my 03400 now. bought it last month with zero hours. is the position of that weep hole a design flaw? i got some oil leaking out now (no big deal - just a few drops) but that weep hole is pointed in a direction that is perfect for catching sand off the front tire??? Does dirt get in there? It this causing the seal failure? Should i jimmy-rig a little tab to stop sand flying in that weep hole? i'm going to the sand dunes this weekend in oregon, and the last thing i want is water and sand swirling around in that water pump shaft cavity - rubbing into those O-rings and seals and causing more issues.

nobody as i can recall has ever said they found any resemblance of grit in there. don't forget these bikes give off a residue which acts like an ear wax. i should leave it and concentrate on the oil seal change that you'll soon need to do.

good luck.

You could conceivably tap the weep hole and use a main jet with the same size hole as a spigot. Then run a hose to a cleaner area of the bike. I ride in the desert, sand, dirt, rocks and have never had a failure of the pump seal or o-rings due to particulate migration into the cavity. Usually the continuous outflow of fluid keeps the internal area clean. Perhaps it was designed to always weep just a bit

my 650 used to weep a lot , because of this i did a fair bit of weeping myself . \:D/

anyway , riding in gravel all the time i noticed the fine dust used to block the weephole . i always made sure it was clean when i stopped , you don't want the weephole blocked .

keep it clear so that if it wants to expell fluid let it do it's job .

thanx for the info! i made a little tab out of tin to cover the weep hole from sand and dirt shooting right in from the front tire. it's probably not even needed but it only took a few minuites. there really is very little oil coming out. it almost seems like it's stopped leaking. the motor got a real workout in the sand at florence oregon past weekend and it seems dry now...good enough for me.
