Difference between 650 and 550

Hi,

I'm new on this board, and I'm a french Zab'ist, so excuse my poor english.
I'm about to sell my new 550 fse (60 hours) in order to get a brand new 650.
But is it worth it ?
For now, I use my bike as a commuter, it gets me to work and it pawns everything I encounter on the WE. The only thing that make me sad with this bike are the upper gears : I find the 5th and 6th gears to not have sufficient power.
I find that climbing (?) is a bit hard on these gears.
Will they be significantly more powerful with a 650, or am I doing a lot of thing in vain ?

For info, I run for the moment with 15-38 setting for chain kit (don't know how to name ?), and I were thinking of putting a 40 sprocket.
I also live live in Grenoble, which is situated in the heart of the Alpes mountains, and thus a lot of turns (?) and climbs.

Thank you for help and excuse me for the spelling.

welcome to UHE soufman

great to have a frenchman here as i know there are many husaberg riders on the french sites but they don't speak english maybe? anyway - you are here and welcome!

your english is good however "pawns" was not the word you needed but perhaps 'beats'?

anyway, your english is better than my french.

i would tune yours rather than change? you can jet the carb better, you can fit an exhaust, you can fit a camshaft, anyway, it is satisfying to do little things to the bike that will make it go quicker.

there are several things that make the bike quicker available. dual valve spring kits are another. they save you power, engine wear, better MPG, they are most noticeable at very low revs.

you can have a 42mm carb with a belmouth in it as well?

lookmin the doc for more information on this under 'tuning' and 'carburation'.

regards

Thank you Taffy, I will have a deeper look on the forums
Furthermore, the 650 was sold yesterday so I think I will have to do mods on mine to get it quicker =)
Is there a REAL difference between theses 2 motors ? I heard like +8 hp and a lot of torque for the 650, but I didn't had the chance to try one.
Finally excuse me for the "pawns", I was thinking of "owns" but I lapsus'ed (yeah, I'm a videogamer =)

Thank for input, and keep it going

Hello SoufMan,

Welcome to the UHE! You're from the home of SM and we haven't got many visitors from there!

As for the 650, yes there is quite a lot of difference. I went out riding the other week. We were riding off-road but on gravel and tarmac nothing would keep up with my 650, not even a 550. And mine was spraying everyone with the gravel in 6th gear - wonderful experience.

You'll not get the performance out of the 550 than you can from the 650 but they do have a different character. The 550 revs a bit more.

Take a 650 out on a test ride and I don't think you'll want to go back to the 550.

All the best,
Simon

I ride the 650 off road. Get it down low and you ride with a measured throttle. Up on top and it has that never ending pull feeling.

The 550 motor is a great motor! Maybe down 5HP from the bigger 650 (628cc) motor but 550cc motor is very strong.

Before you go crazy spending money on a new cam, exhaust, carb bits, etc parts I would suggest you try this simple and inexpensive mod. Buy yourself a 42T or 44T rear sprocket and give the 15T/42T or 15T/44T sprocket combination a try. This should help the bike make the most of 5th and 6th gear.

My bike came stock with 16T/38T gearing to pass government noise regulations. With that tall gearing there was almost no way to use 6th gear unless you were doing 80mph. I'm currently using a 15T/42T sprocket combination.

Hi,
First thanks for your fast and precise answers.
@supertireguy : Tomorrow, I'll put my 40 sprocket and I see how it goes. I will go "poco a poco" until I reach the best point because the last time, I directly put a 46 sprocket on my old 660 smc and I was wheeling on the 4 first gears when trying to accel...
How fast are you with the 15-42 combo ?
Thanks

hi soufman,
i am located in belgium, have ridden in the alpes before, but not on the husa.
i currently ride the stock gearing 15/40 on the 550.
i even find the top gear un-usable ,on flat landscape.
top speed on 15/40 combo is aprox. 180km/h.(fully standard engine)
i only shift to top gear from 100km/h on.
if i was you, i'd try to play with different combo like 15/40 or even 15/42.
i can imagine that the 15/38 is way to long for the 550 in the alpes.

bonne chance

hannes.

Hi hannesd,

I'm trying the 15-40 combo at the moment, I think it's fine but like you, I have a gear to spare.
I 'll let as it, just in case I want more accel in the future.
For montains ride, it could be better

i don't think i'll ever go to 15/42 combo since the bike is a wheely monster as it is already
i don't want to shift all the time and that would be the case with 15/42 i think.
i still clutch the bike up in 4the gear(i can, but i don't do it that often)
3rd gear wheelies are the best way to go,and the shift upwards.

ciao, hannes.

For my stock 15/45 gears on my Fe 650 the front wheel rises with ease in third. 6th gear cruises on the Hwy and is still pulling at 90mph (thats as fast as I have gotten it) but off road not used as much. For an FS I would imagine 15/42 would be ideal and 15/40 at the point where 6th is hard to use unless your taking it on a long road trip. I havent tried the 42 or 40 but just giving you an idea with my Fe.
