Did you know dirt is going into your motor?

All you guys with FCR carbs are pulling a lot of dirt into your motors thru the carb vent lines. It is destroying your valves. George at UPTITE Husqvarna sells the filter kit for the new Huskys. I am sure it will fit Husabergs.

I have seen the dirt in the carbs at Uptite on every one of the bikes he has taken apart.

And just what were you doing at a Husky shop?????? Just when you think you know someone!!!!

I'm not so sure about dirt entering the carb as well. Everytime I open the float bowl it looks pretty clean. The intake tract and valves always look pristine as well. If anyone knows about riding in dust it's gotta be me

I know what you are talking about coronaberg.

You are talking about it under the slides cap and in the general slide top area, right

I have seen it myself on my RFS and heard many other people query where it comes from- vent tubes is the common consensus. Do a search over at KTM talk and there are posts/pics I believe.

You got it ! Some of it can be seen in the top of the carb but what George tells me is the dirt in the float bowl gets sucked into the jets and is what is really damaging the valves.Seems to me all the Mfg that use that carb have valve problems. George makes a nice billet filter bottle about 1" dia and 4" long anodized blue or red or green. Call George Erl l(714) 540-2920 Santa Ana California.I work in Santa Ana and end up there for my lunch breaks now and then.Do you guys remember the guy that threw off his glasses in the mud on Any Sunday?. George is the that guy!

George has been setting up hot Huskys form many years saw some of his work in the mid 80's in Baja. He knows what he is doing

Thanks for the post, think I'll look into some cheap little filters from the auto parts store, or maybe just wrap some foam from an old air filter around the end of each tube and ty wrap it on. Only problem I can see with the filters is if they get wet during a stream crossing they're not going to flow air very well and that will give you some problems. I would imagine that this problem is not limited to FCR carbs though, as all carbs use vents.

I did go and check his web page out. I see he is selling an exhaust system for the YZF400.

What about rerouting the breathers up into one of these little hubs and placing it under the seat?

Wouldn't inserting a filter on or in the breathers create another issue?

Cleaning the float bowl on a regular basis isn't such a hard task either. Even cranking open the drain plug and squirting liberal amounts of brake clean.

Take a look at the solution I started using 12 years ago.

I run in the desert.......

I think he was riding a Sachs or DKW 125 with a leading link front end :)

After all the hard work that Taffy does you would think he would need a breather!

Here in the USA we have dry airborne dirt that we call Dust and if you are not careful it can get anywhere. Over on the other side of the pond your airborne dirt we call MUD and it is not as hard to trap. But it is much harder to clean off when dry! Are you all knowed up Taffy!

Joe, did you use 35mm film containers?

Carb_Vent_Filters.sized.jpg

Yes I did.

I drill a hole in the bottom of the container about 0.010" smaller in dia. than the hose and force the hose through it. Then put a zip tie on the hose to keep it from slipping out
I used some scrap filter material, cut into disks the same side as the container, with some filter oil on it to install. I drilled several breather holes in the container cap and voila, a great easy to maintain filter.

On the upper hoses I used a small hole punch to create cylindrical inserts from the same filter material and just pushed them into the hoses.

Actually, I started doing this in 1982, on my Husqvarna 360 OR for the same reason.

Have NEVER had a problem since, and have put over 10,000 miles on the OR without having to clean the carb or replace the slide. All desert riding!

no, i'm serious! i'm on about the breathers above the slide of course not the obvious ones below at floatbowl level. i'll take it you knew that eric!

regards

Taffy
