RE: Re: Desert info needed.

Back to CHEESEHEAD and his desert trip... Have you been yet or you still planning? le frog is right about the soft stuff, sit back ,slightly, throughout and rock forward to steer, then sit back again. Bobzilla is spot with his advice ,except do not think about a tow rope ...defo take a long tow rope! the grit gets everywhere.. chains and sprockets get chewed and so will your brake pads. Go for cheap{therefore harder pads} as you do not need the brakes but when you touch them you will need something! Water,water,water... it gets seriously hot and you will be permanently on the border line of dehydrated as sand is really tiring to ride. The engine will run hotter so consider 100 degrees as acceptable running temp instead of your usual 88/90 degrees of western european forests! you will ride for hours without seeing another person so you need emergency plans! I have been very lucky with the desert but it is a hostile terrain in many ways But finally remember...Beaten tracks are for beaten men!! Enjoy your trip and ride hard ,fast and aggressively..

Hi Scouser,
That trip was in April, seems like such a long time ago! (have a look in my gallery!!) But we are planing a trip again in April / May next year.
You were discussing the wear in chain, sprockets and brake pads; maybe I did something "wrong" but there was no excessive wear at all, I'm still riding with the same set! The brake pads are still doing great (EBC = expensive but really good) The wear here in the muddy terrain in much worse! The only part that had excessive wear were the tires. I choose Michelin Baja and it was proved to be a bad choice. One of the others was driving on Michelin S12 which was the better choice, more grip and longer lasting. I would like to try the Maxxis IT desert next year but I can't get them here in Europe.
I just bought a used aux fuel tank to solve the drinking problem of the bike and a GPS so I'm almost ready for the next trip!

Regards

Cheers Cheesehead,
will go to gallery after this quick reply. My desert experiences are from the Gulf area....Jordan and Iraq. So a different desert!!! I had tyre problems; punctures from the barbwire and crap from Iran\Iraq war. I use Michelins{ only cos i get them free!!}I have totally destroyed brake pads in the sand so it was interesting to hear that you didn't! I rarely touch my brakes but the grit just eat them. I too was using EBC ones! But not race spec. As for a GPS I could not live without mine!! I use a Garmin XL12 but need to invest in an upgrade. Map and compass just takes too long to check navigate! I like the look of those tanks on display in this segment, but i can live without the the extra range because the extra weight would make me struggle in the technical stuff. {tried a KTM adventurer} I am too short for top heavy machines!Anyway I have rambled on enough so will finish now. Enjoy your second desert trip in April. SCOUSER

folks if you want a giggle you just have to see the bottom three photos!

An article now at http://www.eurosport.com/rallyraid/ about the fantastic Norwegian P.A. Ullevalseter.
Schlessers unique and often incredibly successful 2wd Dakar buggy is covered also.
Robbie Gordon did very well indeed last time at the Dakar, until he broke his "Hummer" and could not finish. It will be interesting to see what he can do this year. http://www.robbygordon.com/. It would be great with more Americans in the rally.
Several teams will use the Bowler 4wd. http://www.bowler-offroad.com/Pressrel.html Looks awesome.
Not that it has anything to do with Husaberg. (yet)
Regards
