Dead engine

I have a 99’ Husaberg FE 600, with a dead engine. As I was entering the highway I had to use a bit of throttle in order to get ahead of some traffic. I started in first gear and quickly changed to second gear and accelerated to about 60 to 80 km/h when the engine suddenly made a small “bangâ€Â
 
Either cam chain has snapped or one of your valves is not closing for what ever reason.
Pull the cam tower off and have a look

This morning I have been out looking at the bike and I can’t see any damage on the outside. The engine is turning as I put it in gear and push it forward and backwards. However it gives a minimum of resistance. Normally I would not be able to roll the bike when engine transmission is in first gear. When I push the bike with transmission in first gear or uses the kick starter with transmission in neutral it sounds like the engine is blowing air through the cylinder head. So there is a possibility that the cam chain has snapped or there is a problem with one of the valves, as supertireguy and 44014 has mentioned.

I will not be able pick the bike apart until first week in April because both me and the bike at the moment is in north-western Spain and I do not have a proper place to do repairs down here. I will return home to Norway and use my Easter holiday to try solve the problem. But if anyone has other ideas for the reason for this problem, please post them.

The valve train sounds most likely, but then there should be some other noise when turning the engine. I take it the spark plug is still in place and in one piece? The decompression might be accidently activated?

At last I have been able to take time to open the engine in search for the source of the problem. As I took off the rockerarm-cover I found that the cam chain would not move as I turned the engine. It looked like there vas a problem with the chain down in the transmission area. After opening the transmission-cover I found that the crankshaft sprocket (the lower cogwheel for the cam chain) was broken in two, and the woodruff key was twisted.

I did not find any thing indicating that the cam chain was jammed by any objects and there was no loose parts/objects inside of the transmission-cover.
When the cam chain stopped the piston gave the exhaust valves a good hit and the water pump was chewed up by the steelpin driving it.

Does anyone have any idea why this has happened? Is it just wear and tear or should I be more concerned?
