Dead Batteries

Hi Guys,
My Latest problem is that I have fitted a new battery ,I'm assured it is the equivelent of the Yuasa YTZ7s - the store didn't have the Yuasa ! and after about 2 hrs of riding , and it starting off the button the battery dropped a cell. Suspicious I was , but took it back to the store and after confirming that it had a dropped / shorted cell , they gladly replaced it with a new one. I suspected that I may have had trouible with my starter motor so I replaced it with another which was in known good order , and also the solenoid before my next outing with the new battery , again, this time it didn't last an hour before it died..
Is there a way that the starter can come into mesh or try to keep turning over while riding - although there is no sign of heat on the cables or noise to suggest it ,but I'm suspicious of this. The only other thing is if the battery is a electrolyte filled , not gell cell. what are your thoughts guys ?? I will hard wire my multi meter before my next ride so I can monitor the voltage as I ride - I've seen nothing unusual while it's on the stand.

Hi Boris,

If your starter ingaged while the engine was running it would self destruct with the high rpm and the centrifugal force would rip it apart, used to see this from time to time when I was rewinding starter motors.
Regarding the charge to your battery it shouldn't make any difference wether it is gel or acid battery it will still charge the same.
Make sure your ground is good from the regulator rectifer. What make of battery were you supplied.

RE: Re: Dead Batteries

Hey Sparks,
The Battery is called an OPTIMAX I think ( I'm away at the moment which is why I can't be 100% ) and I didn't think that the gell and electrolyte would charge differently , but that maybe the wet cell would be more prone to being shaken to bits , more so than the gell cel. I realise that the starter should be thrown to peices with bits of commutator throughout it if it was is mesh but really dont know of anything else that could cause a dead short and destroy a brand new battery without damaging any wiring elsewhere. I have a new regulator rectifier which is not installed yet - but will once I am confident that my little problem wont damage it I will then install it if needed. Very strange that 2 brand new batteries would die within 2 hrs ,and no sign of wiring damage ,or any other damage.
??

Re: RE: Re: Dead Batteries

I agree also it is a bit strange to go through two batteries in such a short time but it will be one of two things either your unlucky and it's another duff battery or there is a problem with the charging system ie the regulator rectifier, but do make sure that the ground wire or the body of regulator rectifier has got a good ground if not what should go to ground will go to your battery I think you know what I am getting at.

RE: Re: RE: Re: Dead Batteries

Just to give you guys an update on my little problem with my 03 501, I think it has exposed itself at last . I have hard wired a multi meter to my battery and cable tied it to my handle bars so I can see what it is doing as I ride at all revs to make sure that no voltage spikes would damage any thing else . After it showing no charge at all - I installed a new regulator / rectifier and after this it would not start - normally second kick - even after sitting for weeks. Further investigation found signs of heat at the earth terminal block that screws on the back of the reg / rectifier - and I checked the Ohms across red / Black - It is open circuit !! Looks like my second SEM stator has died now , at least I have found the problem - or a big part of it . - And having seen the melted insulation on the earth I can now come to the conclusion that the stator was shorting out and probably caused my battery to die,

Hi Boris,

Sorry to here your SEM has packed in all together seems like I was right in my last post, earthing is some thing grossly over looked and can cause all sorts of problems, but this will have no bearing on the ignition side going down and visa versa.
Davidhusa is having similar problems and I guanrantee it's down to earthing so if you read this David check out your earths.

Regards

Sparks.
