Dangers of a Husky carb

I like to tell you all of the tails of woe we get here now and again.

We've had a 1994 Husaberg FC600 in. it looks bloody rough and it is a non-runner.

the owner had a friend work on it, he shorted out and bang the coil popped a lump in the side. It also had an electrex stator on it that read just 1400 which is well below the 1750 recommended.

it also had a Husky carb on it.

we initially recommended to the customer to upgrade to the Mk3 stator and the black late model SEM ignition modules but this didn't work so that was thrown out and so we ordered two early red coils and two Mk1 Stators from Sparks. one of each for spares.

we had a spark but after hundreds of kicks we got it running but it was awful and with a strobe connected to the HT lead we could only see an intermittent spark. so we changed the coil for the other and kicked and kicked till it did the same.

after fitting new parts in the carb, we also had a flooding carb which we initially dismissed as being a stuck float after the clean but it just wouldn't stop! it was some Husky carb at a guess as it had an AB atomiser fitted.

we then stripped the carb again and this time all new stuff in it but it wasn't a husaberg carb.

so it had the following
atomiser
needle
smaller choke jet
new O rings
CD1 jet
correct PJ for a 50 cutaway
new fuel valve and the fuel height sorted.

we then noticed that the atomiser holder that protrudes into the carb throat was totally different and luckily had the right one so we tapped the old one out with an old atomiser I'd adapted to being a tool and fitted the new one.

we put it back together and STILL IT FLOODED. so, nowadays, with my Ducati Pantah F2 stuff nearby i went and found a completely untouched GLASS FLOATBOWL still in its box that I'd once bought! this showed that although the arms were trying to stop the two floats they didn't?

i followed a hunch and had the fuel valve apart only to see that the fuel valve was sitting on a paper gasket 0.4mm thick and not the fibre gasket that is 1mm thick (and red usually). so we put the old fibre washer in and watched it fill with fuel again and this time it stopped at the right moment.

BTW, that moment is about 1mm below the seem joint. how many of you thought it was lower? I did!

anyway, we re-fitted the carb and started it after 40 kicks but the ignition advance was uncontrollable and we had a dog.

my money was on the carb which has NO BRASS JETS IN THE FRONT FACE!

so we fitted my own Keihin and it started and ran OK

we then did the ignition advance and it was like 40BTDC at idle!

again we didn't panic and retarded it till we got 12d which as you may know is really 6!

we then tried the electrex stator back on to see how it would run even though the readings are low and it ran beautifully. however it still sits 2mm further in advance than a SEM stator. whacky or what!

so there you have it. all good - except the carb? remember the carb?

well we've ordered some mikuni slow jets and bonded them in those front holes having drilled the pilot to 0.5mm and the main air to 1.0mm.

we'll be fitting this carb back on tomorrow and let you know how it went. but other than the coil that was gone when we got here that carb has been bloody expensive!

Hi Taff

Its a learning experience

For this old dogs you must have a new complete ignition and new carb, than you know it works, when you have problems, just change them, and you'll be saving a lot of time.

Flipping heck watch you don't stub your toe on the corner of a door then as you look down bang your head on it, hop backwards slip on an extension lead and land elbow first in the container of used engine oil launching it all over the floor for your great aunty Winterbottom to come in with a cup of tea balanced on her zimmer frame only to slip on it sending the cup of tea across the room to land on the dog who then bites your ear!!

Sometimes though those frustrating jobs feel really good to complete.

well we refitted it and the carb was dripping again. I guess we could pour copious hours on whether or not we have the right float system but having said all else about it I decided to bend the tangs down quite heavily and now it has stopped leaking.

that done it started first kick but stood there blubbering its tiny little eyes out so, mindful that the only non-2000 jetting left in the carb is the "/50 cutaway slide" and the associated 55PJ I decided to keep the slide as is as my hand filing can't be relied on to make a decent CNC copy so we lowered the PJ to a 50 and she purrs and starts about second or third kick now.

It runs well enough and the customer will be happy - till he sees the bill...........
