Damaged valve

Hi,
found this one... :( one of the exhaust valves on my fe450 2008
does anyone know why this happens?
what do i need to do when i install a new valve ?

that doesnt seem real bad, does it ride past the seal? if not, you can file it smooth and use the valve. otherwise, lap the new valve to make sure it has a good seat and you should be pretty much set.
 
your cotter/valve keeper did that damage. they do do that sometimes. as they say, you can still use it but get rid of any high point now so the valve will come out. use a small file to rub down that area then you should be able to pull it through.
