Dakar restriction- KTM withdraw.

You'd have thought that they would give 12 months notice as there alot of peeps who are or have preping bikes that they now cant ride.

The 450 restriction will not kick in till 2011 for non-factory riders.

For 2010 Dakar over 450cc can still be run with a limiter of some kind for the 690's etc.

At this stage there will be a Berg in 2010 for the first time since 2005 when Rob Van Pelt from Holland ran a 550.

A 570 is currently being prepared and entry registration has already been submitted to ASO !

DakarBerg is heading to Argentina in October

Advantage Fretigne! That is one guy who will be happy.
This is in the long run a very positive development for the dakar rally. The 450 limitation should not come as a real surprise to anyone since ASO have wanted it for years.
I'm sure we'll see a lot of KTMs in the rally in spite of the displacement limit.

Sounds like USAC back in the 70's when they did their best to kill off the indy open wheel racing series by making rule changes that penalized those who were bringing the most money to the sport. That's why CART was formed by the owners.

Now I don't know dung from shinola about Rally Racing, that's a disclaimer for my next un educated statement.

It would seem to me that running a 450 on a Rally of that length would put a pretty big strain on that moto. Fretigne, is a factory rider no? I wonder how many engine changes he has throughout the rally? I would think........that as a privateer a bigger motor with more torque would require less revs and be more reliable.

I don't know how much time, or notice was given to KTM, but, seems to me they have been working on that 690 motor for several years now, and obviously spent a great deal of money developing it. And like I said before KTM has been putting a lot of money into the sport, and to piss them off to the point where they pull out of the series is not such a great idea. They have a great 450 bike so hopefully they will be back with it in the future.

It's not Dakar anyways if its not in Africa. Why not move the Boston Marathon to Berlin and still call it the Boston Marathon. No interest in it anymore from me. Another victory for the terrorists.

And it's not even named Paris-Dakar any more, I mean "Telefonica dakar" or "euro-mil-hoes dakar"..., 'doesn't have the same magic to it really. I think that ASO still runs the Paris marathons though, now that you brought the marathons up...
No, I think it is more of the event as such, more than about what you call it or where it is run. The challenge, passion, adventure, values...

For the same power the smaller motor with less torque available would rev higher and be less reliable.
For the same revs it would perhaps be somewhat equally reliable and producing less power.
But was that not the point?, that less power would equal less speed?
People are still going to die but now ASO have at least made an effort to do something about it.

Motor racing of any kind is dangerous regardless of the size of the motor or vehicle its in.
Truth is If it wasn't dangerous, everyone would be doing it.

And then we learn that about 60% of the dakar riders by choice already use 450ies for the rallye.
The last word may not be said, rules are not written in stone and they can change again.

no, it is 60% use over 450's, have a look at the 2009 entry list

Well I am sure the name Dakar has been trademarked and the move to 450's is to get big money involved such as the Japanese manufacturers...it's all about the money. With that backing who cares how many motors you swap out in a race?
