I have a FC550 01, would like to relining or replace the cylinder. New cylinder about $250.00 US. Relining of the cylinder where, who, cost and how they relining/plating? If anyone knows of a good shop that they have used in the US, please let me know.

Thanks MARS

US Chrome is the best I know of. It's 200.00 (maybe more now, as I have not used them in a year or so) plus whatever the shipping will be. It will end up being the same price as the factory piece.

For a Husaberg, a new factory liner is a better choice. For bikes that require a complete cylinder (400.00+), a re-line makes sense, though.

Does the '01 model not have a cylinder sleeve?

We have a place down here in Oz called LM electroplating, which plate cylinders with what is commonly called Nikasil, they reckon it is the most advanced plating available, to have my old KX 125 done it cost A$600 or thereabouts.

hey azza!!!!

as in first used on the 1954 moto guzzi's?

what they mean is the way it's applied maybe or that nothing better has come along? but the the MG line is true and guilio carcano was the man that did it. i think they first discovered it around the end of WW2.

Can you get a new piston to suit the lined sleeve after having it done ? I thought that nikasil coated barrels needed to run a different piston. Anyone know if this is true ?

All modern motorcycle cylinders are plated, so there are no special pistons. The good plating places like US Chrome require that you supply a piston with the cylinder that you are getting redone. They then bore and replate your cylinder to match the new piston perfectly.

john

you'll find that that is the theory but in the real world they put them back to 'as was' everytime. so wildman - the same bore everytime and the same piston EVERYTIME. put yourself in the position of a business and think of the smelly stuff you tell the customer to make him feel good.

i used to measure the piston, then measure the bore and the piston should not have fitted! - but it did! so forget all that stuff about air cooled bikes having "looser tolerances".

Moto what?? - sounds like a supercharged Booger...

Nah, just kiddin' Taff 'ol mate, I thought Mars meant that he had to re-line the alum cyl. not get a new sleve?!

Yeah, I was ripped on the cost for the KX re sleeve, but it was schite hot when it was rebuilt, kept close to 250's in the right hands - mine were obviously not the right hands.
