Hi All,

New here, tried the search function didnt really find what i was looking for.

Just bought a fe550e '05, just wondering what good compression should be? I think i'm a little low, added a bit of oil and compression didnt change much, not sure if it is good compression or the top end needs a refresh.

I don`t think you can check the compression with a gauge because of the automatic decompression
device will be operating.

i see. even with the kick starter?
-this makes testing more difficult. any other ways to test engine efficiency except for pull the thing apart? :|

Thanks for the reply. I'm used to working on old jap bikes. -a significant increase in technology me thinks.

i have checked compression with aa regular compression tester (with the universal rubber attachment end you have to hold into the cylinder i didnt have an attachment for the samll plug hole) using electric start i still had high readings, i would guess a minimum of 125psi would be expected, when i checked mine the timing chain was off one tooth (this is how i bought the bike) and the reading i got was consistanly 150 with the autodecropessor working ok i have not tried it since i put the timing chain to the correct setting to know if it changed, i also used a leakcown tester but had a hard time with it setting with 100psi like you should tast it with...it always tried to turn the cylinder over but again the cam timing was off one toothe when i ran the test, i tried to use a socket and breaker bar to hold to crank at tdc when appling pressure but it just loosens the nut on the crankshaft because it has right hand threads....good luck

p.s the auto decomp mechanism is still activly working when you use the kickstart, like i said above the tests i ran were with the cam timing off one tooth and have not tried it since then

seems counter intuitive that the compression drops when timing and auto-decompression are working properly. I guess it means the auto de-comp is working properly. makes it possible to kick over... which is nice.

thanks guys,
