Cuts out in deep water

G-day
Last run out. We were riding through water and most of us temporarily cut out when charging through deep water.
Does anyone know why this happens and can it be cured.
My friend thinks it could be the water shorting out the spark plug cap area.
I think its the carb breathers getting blocked .... any ideas ?
Apart from go round the water thanks.

This a common complaint from the ATV crowd.Although I can not say what the problem is with 100% confidence it is generally felt that when the hot engine is "charged" through deep water it creates a certain amount of steam that enters the air box as part of the intake charge. This steam readily passes though the filter and causes a hesitation. If your engine quits or hesitates if you go through water at a slow pace then it is more likley that your carb vents may be the issue. Some bikes are more prone than others to this steam issue as it often depends on the undertank area in relation to the air intake....

thanks nsman
Interesting point.
If therefore i used a standard bash plate, could that help. Because, come to think of it, the ones that didn't cut out had bashplates on, but there bikes were newer. !?

if your charging thru deep water chances are that the carb breathers are getting blocked with water that has been sucked in, this then causes the engine to cut out.
once out or the engine dies the the suction from the carb reduces and the water drains out of the pipes.
hence the advice to go steady thru deep water and not open the throttle in deep water.

Where I bought my bike, they were kind enough to re route these vent hoses up and out of the way. My air filter will get wet before the ends of the hoses do, at which point it'll be too late.

cypher said it. frst things to go are the carb vent hoses. cut them far shorter and if your carb is like mine 99% of them werew unnecassary.

ok - thanks chaps
I did a modification on my vents when i first got the bike, by fitting a T piece and sending one pipe up to the headlamp and one just below the carb. I always clean them with carb cleaner - but will check them again.
I do get water into my stator so this time have sealed it with high temp silicon.
Those valves from Satex sure look good ..... now if i could only prove that this is my problem ....... :? :?

God knows where it gets in ...
This weeks ride - still got loads of water in stator....
Just have to wash it out every ride as before.

Well, it stops me from just lazeing around in the sun all day ! ?

I'm confused. If it's in the stator, doesn't that mean your oil is diluted and contaminated with water? I realize you're trying to figure out where it's coming from, but if the water isn't systemic, then the entrance almost has to be local to the site of entry, such as a bad gasket seal, right?

have you done the drilled hole in the bottom of the case modification?
throw away that huge 'O' ring and rely 100% on the silicone instead. it doesn't have to be high temp and you don't need carb cleaner.

did you know the cover can tilt yet still pull down?

did you do the shepherds crook at the top of the wiring harness? or stick some silicon in and then 'SQUIDGE' closed with a zip tie?

did you smear some stuff over the stator and inside face of the flywheel/rotor? i use vaso and despite all the BS there is still traces of it there the next time i take the cover off MONTHS later.

i used a new wiring harness 'tube' and fed all the wires through because the orignal splits but my stock is 30 years old and hasn't in 4 years!!!

to get the wires up the tube use some safety wire or welding wire from the other end and sent down everytime to collect a wire and hook around the spade connectors, then pull them up the tube adjusting it as you go. it's easier than it sounds!

lots of silicone around the area where the wiring tube enters the back of the cover.

have you siliconed all the spade connectors and the HT lead and cap at all ends?

try again and good luck.

Hi ya Taff
Answers.
Not drilled the hole - will do.
Tilting cover - I will try that.
Shepards crook - yes on breather pipe mod and wiring harness.
Vaseline - I normally use a bit of grease.
Harness tube - i will check it for penetration.
Silicon round the back of the cover where the grommet is - interesting ?
I use an ignition sealer on my HT lead & cap - it puts a plasticky film over it all.
Great Ideas Dave
Thanks.

Satex sir - i thought the cover too - sealed it all but still got loads of water in. I will do all of Taffs suggestions that i have not done already and try again.

vaseline is petroleum jelly isn't it? and PJ is a conductor of electricity... that's why i thought of it even though it's really for chaffed fannys 8O 8O
hahahahaha!!!!!!

if you have not been siliconing the wiring tube into the grommet and the grommet into the cover i would be 60% that's your leak there!

the cover can be a pig!

I have sealed the ignition cover of my 01 with 3M aluminum tape P.N. 06930 instead of silicone as it is easier to remove.

I keep this in my toolbox along with the old standard duct tape.

A rag or sponge can be put between tank and backbone to prevent water splashes from running along the top of the frame and reaching the air filter.
The SEM ignition seems to be hygroscopic. Even if it sat bone dry for weeks in the garage with the cover off and you take it out and ride it a dry sunny day there is still condensation to be found on the inside of the peek hole plug.

I do the exact same thing for rain races.........I also get excess lube that gets in there from my chain as well....It works like a charm......"Great Minds........."
Its the only thing I hate about my Husaberg ! with vents closed I can run through water up to my tank on the KX 8O
