:( hi guys what a great forum , maybe some of u can help me out.
i bought this 501 fe 2000 about 3 months ago and had the usual problems getting it started , but after some time and effort i figured it out.
it then ran great for a day or so , and then when it would cut out id have to wait 10 minuits or so , to start it up again , so obviously it was running to rich , and the valves needed adjusting .
so i send it to the local mechanic here in cartama - spain.
who fixed it and it ran ok for a few weeks.
then all of a suden it started runing like "@#@#@@ , you know what imean.
so i set the main jet leaner , and had alook at the valves , the manuale says that the clearance should be 0.10 mm , sounds fine but where are do you put the feeler gages , i looked and looked is ther a special tool.

so after setting the main jet at 1 turn it was running great , till i got up in the mountains yesterday it was about 40 degrees and it strted acting up as i was 60 km from the nearest town , same thing had to wait 15 min to start , it would then turn over for 2 sec and then cut out , only way to start was jump starting and then keep the throtlle on , wich got me to the nearest town .
then it started coughing sputering black smoke and ten that was it so parked the bike and hitched aride home for the rest of the 3o km.
after having picked up the bike with the van i checked the oil and it smels like petrol.

its got a del orto carb and the bike has had very little use before igot it it was parked up for over a year.

please help.

oh yeah it also got realy hard to kick over the engine like it would block up and only get a full kick every 7 to 10 kicks , please help :( :?

You may be having a fuel issue. Either some of all of the following:
Clean the tank filter in the petcock.
Replace inline fuel filter. If you don't have one get one.
Clean carburetor pay attention to the jets for cleanliness and the float height and float seal. Do you have fuel running out the overflow when sitting? if so the float is not seating.

If all of that is good then you should probably look at your stator. A going bad stator can give you fits. Hard starting and then just stop running.

Plug wire, cap and plug ok?

From what you told us though I would start with the fuel system.

Let us know what you find.

thanks bob yes it was a few things mainly water in the system , i had the guys down the road put on new tires , and seems they washed the bike and filled the air filter with water.
after i striped the carb found it full of white foamy stuff also the crank breather tube was filed with it , and when i dreaned the oil it was like grey and sludgy , so first i thought a blown head gasket but checked the radiator and it was still ful.
i then flushed the entire system , cleaned the carb and set the floater a bit higher , so it dont flood no more , and its running quete smooth now.

another stupid question when i turn the main jet inwards am i making it richer or poorer i know stupid question :?
