Crankcase breather question 08 FE 450

While adding a coolant overflow kit by Motion Pro I thought I'd clean up the long snake of a breather hose that comes off the front breather hole. This bike was formerly a GNCC bike and the back breather hole is plugged and the front has a yucky hose that runs along the radiator and down below the front of the engine. It has some funky filter stuffed in the end.

Since I'll be taking this bike in the woods after doing my MX fun in April, if I left this hose could it potentially suck up water going through puddles? Can I shorten the hose and add a filter or do I need a catch can too?

I've read the Lineaweaver post on Crankcase 101 but that got me more confused with all the options.

Thanks LadyBerg (Colleen)

take a look just above the rocker cover up to the frame("air box") and you will see probably a blocked hole that was previously used for the 2 crankcase breather tubes.

i would personally plug it again in the same hole. this will surely make it safer at river passages.

the problem is that if you like to have your bike up side- down (wish you dont), then you might some times clog the carb with some oil coming of the breather hole.

Somehow I can't stand running it all back through the carb plus if I got the parts and replumbed up the stock Berg crank vent system, think of all the HP I'd lose! 8O

I think I'll find a check valve, new hose, and do it that way. Wondering if I should unplug the rear vent or just leave it.

Many of the factory race Bergs used to run the blocked frame and ran the crankcase breather hose down the side of the rad.Not pretty but it worked good and when you turned the bike upside down the motor did not fill up with oil. When the motor only holds a litre you really cant dump out any so i do not think that oil running out the hose was ever an issue.
Lineawaever recommended a automotiive high speed check valve as a performance enhancement.
Re: Jegs crankcase evacuation system...just google it.

My 06 450 WEC works bike is vented in this manner with a hose running from the top of the motor down along the rad into the skid plate with no PVC wide open and has never been a problem. The frame hole is covered with metal HVAC tape works great. The factory used blue Goodyear 19mm or 3/4" automotive heater hose. I found it a heavy equipment jobber or supply store.

Well I'm leaning towards keeping it the way it is with the Long hose. But please confirm guys...if I ride through a big puddle will it suck up water??? Or does it depend on how FAST I ride thru water :bounce3:

Sorry about all this posts I just want to take care of my baby! Colleen

if you stall in there and try to start it you might suck up some water or mud but with a one way valve on the breather id reckon it would be fine

if it worries you, just feel the flow out of the hose when the engines running, with the high speed air valve the nett flow on mine was pretty much zero unless on WOT at high rpm for 30-40 seconds

in any case when the engine is running even without a valve the flow is usually outward

Your best bet is to go back to the Lineaweaver 'Crankcase 101' thread and install a high speed automotive one way check valve in the breather tube. This has worked so well on my '04 KTM that I was able to route the crankcase breather back to its original location in the carb inlet.
