hey guys
just before a big ride recently at killarney i discovered i had a huge crack in my front rim leaving barely a half inch left of metal in the middle of the rim .
I had this welded up as i was going on a big ride in 2 days and didn't have enough to buy a new rim .
What im asking here is

(A)What causes this
(B)what is a good brand of rim that will take a hiding
(C)will rims off any other bike fit so maybe i could go looking at wreckers

cheers doug

sounds to me that you had a poor weld that took a hit and separated. any rim with the same width and depth and # of spokes ought to work.

Its not a unheard of problem, not that I want to promote another
site. Brian (bp219) started a thread at KTM TALK about Excel rims,
and cracks on the weld. Most people have it welded ground and
carry on with no problems from it. Only once I read some where
that a guy took it to a redneck/yeahoo (sorry for the inference).
They welded it overheating the aluminum. This caused major
rim failure! overheating aluminum makes it brittle?
I was told to MAKE sure the laces are in good shape (tight and true)
and that will minimize any rim failure

44 - There was a thread or two a couple of years back about rims and cracks - search for "Akront", "DID" or "Excel" to find them. It also describes a reversal in front wheel spoke pattern on 'bergs from about 2000 which will affect you if you want to relace it.

Husky front rims should fit the early models. Mr Husky quoted me $600 just for a front rim!!!

KTM or Yammakazuka ones should fit the later ones.

At a pinch you can file the spoke nipple holes of a wrong-un to fit if you have one, but it is time-consuming, is a bit ugly and mayn't be as strong.

Mine is a filed Akront one off an early drum brake CR wheel that I picked up for $5, but it matches the Akront that has been fitted to the rear. Post if you need photos or more info.
