Cracked rear rim FS570..

Hi all,

Just recently i've noticed a crack in my rear rim around one of the spoke holes. The wheels are the factory Saxess Tubeless rims by KTM which i think are made by Behr.

What are my options in replacing this rim? i'd like to keep using a tubeless style rim and re-lace using the original cush drive hub and spokes from the old wheel if possible to lessen the expense, I do want to use a quality rim this time as the Saxess rims do not seem to be very strong.

Cheers!

Where is it cracked, and why did it crack?

IMO, that is where I would start, so it doesent happen again.

My Behr rim developed multiple cracks from the tire hitting the silencer. More about that here;

<2008 Berg servicing, mods, pros and cons, issues, and ways to resolve them

Back to your rim, they come on KTM 690 SM, as well as on the FS570.

They are not made of cheese as some would claim.

I beat the ever-loving scat out of my rims riding rocky trails and potholed dirt roads.. Mind you, they are 2005 wheels though, and made of Parmesan, instead of Brie.

17,000 miles so far, and just one tiny owwee on the front from hitting a square rock at speed.

Excel or sun rims if you don't go with oem.

Any supermoto rim can be made tubeless.

Its started to crack around one of the spoke holes that the spoke goes through. At first i thought it was just the paint on the rim that may be cracking as the tire has not gone down. Im not sure why its cracked there are no other signs of damage on the rim or anywhere else, I may have hit a pothole is all i can think of.

It is just aluminum so I'd consider having it welded for now. These wheels come up for sale here and there, since theyre not wide enough for some, so they sell their stock wheels.
That is a stock ktm rear hub, so new spokes and a DID/Excel rim is an easy option if you can't get a ktm/behr replacement.

Hi Rensho, I really want to replace the rim, welding is not an option. If i use an Excel how do i convert it to tubeless like the Behr rim? I dont want to use another Behr rim..they don't appear to be anywhere near as durable as the Excels on my other bikes.

I used these stickers, then black RTV (3 coats) I wanted to be able to true the wheel periodically as I have very little clearance between the tire and swingarm/chain.
Proper preparation and curing time is paramount.

Some have had good results with leading edge tape for aircraft. (3M tape)

I posted an update on my setup recently, (on the last page)

You have to have a real tubeless wheel try a Faba I have a set and there lighter and stronger than the Behr Imho.

*you don't have to have a tubeless rim.

Any supermoto rim can be made tubeless.

They all will have the safety bead, shown in the above pic.

I did the tubeless conversion using Seal-All for a DR650 and put about 1000 miles of mostly dirt roads and 2 track without any problem. So I did the same for my FE450. Got a flat on the front. There was no way I could get enough volume to get the bead to seat with a hand pump. Had to put a tube in. Now I have TuBliss and have not had a problem in the one ~60 mile ride. I really like being able to "plug" a flat in 2 minutes rather than patch/change a tube. But......if the bead comes off......how will you get it to seat on the trail?

Cheers guys, probably going to use an Excel rim and do a tubeless conversion on it..i don't really want to use another Behr rim unless they are stronger now then they were in 2010?

Caffeineo: Trail riding wont be a problem as this bike doesn't get taken off-road! its a factory Super Motard so i only use it for street duties. :D
