Counter balancer stuff

hey all,

I have some questions regarding the counter balancer (02 470)

do they rotate opposite direction of the crank and 90 degrees apart when the piston is at TDC and BDC?

can it be long lived with the double bearing set-up or sould one consider removing it for street use?

with a single row they are a positive hazard in the 400 and the 470. go to double row if you continue. you'll need the small washer that the 501/55/650s had to go with it.

the CB rotates the opposite way to the crank.

for relaibility remove it. for comfort - keep it. the decision is yours!

470/501/550/650-2001 use update part # 201 257-01
470/501/550/650-2002 use update part # 210 243-01

can we be clearer about that eric?

210 -243-01 is the 2-bearing and balancer weight assembly including the circlip and small shim (0.2mm = .008") and was fitted as standard on 501/550/650 from late '02 onwards.

201-257-01 i'm not so hot on but i think it's the single row balancer with a different mesh for the gears which was used in the '01 models and some early '02s before the change. on the engines i have seen, the '02s have "02" punched on the bottom of the balancer weight.

however, what i'm on about here is that you can go into upgrades in the doc and see that ausberg has found out that you can machine two standard bearings and fit them straight in your balancer whether it be single bearing now or double!

the bearing in the single row is 9mm and the washer is 3mm making 12mm. the double row has two 5.9mm bearings and a 0.2mm shim = 12mm. the shim number is

210 246-01 Shim doub.bear.count.balancer 0,2mm 02-

if you remove the balancer, does the crank need to be modified? i have the 210 243 01 and the bearings. i am trying to decide whether or not to use it. Taffy, I take it the balancer was more of a problem on the 400 and 470 due to higher rpms?

no doug, it was more of a problem on the 400/470 because it was single row. before they went to double row on the 501/550/650 i suppose it was trouble for them mostly! fact is, the single row was dodgy!

should read the doc doug coz it's old ground mate. the balancer helps at low revs which is where i race, low revs woods..... so mine is in and has only ever been a single row. unbelievably smooth compared to every other bike excepting the 470 perhaps. even cypher's 450 wasn't as smooth. ought to come from him really but it's what he said....

use it if you want a smooth bike, use it if you go to double row, and definately go to double row if you thrash it ALL the time!

when the balancer bearings fail, is it likely to cause a lot of damage if you promply shut it down?
