Cough cough die

Hi All

Raced my 2001 FE501E for the first time properly at the weekend. First day went fine (will post report when time allows) and the first 4 laps of day two were great also. Toward the end of the fourth lap the bike started coughing and surging like it was running out of fuel. I fumbled around for the fuel taps, by the time I found one the bike engine had died. Put the taps to reserve and in 2 kicks she fired up and ran fine. Refueled and set taps back to main and set off on 5th lap. After a bit the coughing and surging happened again and the engine died, again 2 kicks and she was back and running fine. This happened 3 or 4 times until she coughed and died and when kicked over would only idle or run just above idle, any revs and she would splutter, the engine would die if the revs were held or recover to a normal tickover if the throttle was released. After about 3 or 4 minutes she would rev fine so I rode back to the paddock and retired. This problem did not seem to depend on the angle of the bike and only happened at revs.

I have not done any thing other than clean the bike so I will check for dirt in the carb. I have checked the air filter which was dirty but not clogged and the fuel filler vent which seems to be fine.

Any ideas please, any one else had these symptoms? I need some ideas of things to look at when I get back to the workshop tomorrow.

Thanks

Barry

Hack, Hack, sputter, die...

Hi, barry...
Have had same problem in my '98 numerous times. always turns out to be very fine grit or silt in carb (Dellorto PHM40 OEM). Have to disassemble, blow out with air, run very fine wire through all jet passages. Occassionaly, have to drain tank and slosh a bit of clean gas around, then put gas in lawnmower...!! Always ok after that. Happens most often after several rides in dry and dusty conditions; wet doesn't seem to bother it... just me!!

barry

just check that the carb breather pipes are clear. that big mud pie may have blocked a pipe. i lost revs for 2 seconds on colin's bike but she recovered.

Could maybe be water in your fuel, when racing i put a little meths in the jerry can to take up any condensation. Jared

HI,

for me this sounds like a passing ignition!!!...some friends of mine had this also!!!.......but check also the carb, when you are lucky there was only water in the fuel....take out all jets and clean them with air pressure!!!!!
