correct kick start procedure?

I tried kicking the bike on a few different occasions but couldn't. now I know it works because a fellow rider helped me when we were out on a ride but he just played with every thing not really knowing what he was doing.

Are there any Do and Don't as far and kick starting the bike? like not kicking with throttle open or anything like it? any advice about hot starting versus cold starting?

I appreciate the help as it is embarrassing to have someone else kick your bike for you

Thanks

Mati

I'm sure others have more experience than me. Mine is a 01 with a different carb than yours. I never give mine throttle while kicking as it WILL kick back. Much of it is techniqe and practice (you are using your left leg).
Here is my procedure
Cold
Gas on, choke on
Kick through 5 times while holding in decomp lever
Release decomp
Turn over until compression
Pull decomp lever an move the kicker an inch or so
Release decomp lever and let kicker come back to top
Remove choke
Give a mighty kick

Hot
Kick over to find compressioN
Use lever to get by compression
Let kicker come back to top
Give a mighty kick

I find cold, I need to lean the bike on a wall to really throw my weight into it.
Hot, I can do standing

my 450 was the hardest berg to kickstart of all the ones i had due to the short stroke. it was hard to position the piston a smidge past tdc, which is the preferred start position. mostly closed throttle unless flooded

Its a real pain when these bergs wont start - I nearly sold mine as had to get help to start & that's really embarrassing.
Now it starts so easy 1st kick. I can drop it on a track - pick it up - 1 kick & starts.

From cold - choke on - 2 kicks - choke off - 1 kick & woosh - away we go.
From hot - 1 kick (even standing next to the bike) & away we go.

Reason...stator stator stator...

Valve adjustment / updated de-comp mod etc etc all helps but stator stator stator.

oh & 2 flicks of the throttle before any kicking - then leave throttle closed otherwise it will flood.

Well I upgraded by battery from a lead acid to a lithium and what a difference it has made!

I have found that the starter will just spin if I try to e-start it when it is cold. I guess the multi-viscosity oil is too thin and the starter clutch won't grab. So I face the bike towards Sweden and follow the recommended kick starting procedures. Once it is running and reached operating temperature it will restart using the e-start every time.

The lithium battery seems to be able to charge while riding. After riding for 50 miles with many stops and restarting the battery still showed a full charge. I never had this with a lead acid battery.

I always pulled in the decompression lever and either kicked the Berg over a few times or used the E-start when cold. After that most of the time it would start first or second kick, or it took a few cycles with the E-start, choke on and no throttle when cold. Warm the E-start worked every time.

My 450 is the same starting procedures.I will put the bike on a solid stand and stand beside it on another stand, and kick it with my right leg. New knee on the left side, and do not want it kicking back on it, I give it about a 1/8th of a crack on the throttle. Two or three kicks.
Hot E button every time.

It's not embarrassing, it's a Husaberg!

I have a 2002 FE650 and I was in the same boat when I first had it.

I have always been told to:

Pull the choke out

Give it a few cycles with the decomp lever pulled in

With the decomp lever pulled in, try and find TDC (it will get to a point in the stroke where it feels tough)

Stop it at TDC, Pull the decomp lever and kick through an inch past TDC.

Once you have done that, return the kickstart to the top and kick through.

That is the basic concept of how to kickstart the bergs, there are plenty of gurus out there that could tell you a lot more but at least this gives you a start.

I've had my bike since April and only kicked it over around 8-10 times but this is always my go to procedure and usually takes around 5 attempts.

There is definitely an art to it

Hope this helps!

Apologies!

I forgot my auto decomp doesn't really work so i have to pull in the decomp

I should start a thread about resolving itt to be honest
