coolant spewing out

so was on the trail first time goin well, and the bike just started spewing coolant out, couldnt see where from, am guessing overflow hose, any ideas why?
thanks

dont think its head gasket, no smoke from exhaust, and only did it for 10 secs or so. I read on another forum that if you drop them fuel leaks out and tricks ecu to run lean and it over heats, literally dropped it 30 seconds earlier. It didnt do it again since, been trying to over heat it by idling it and nothing.
I also read stock exhaust make them over heat on slos section, was going very slow as well.
Will try process of elimination.
thanks.

Well overheating is the obvious reason.

Try to do a ride without overheating (no slow parts) and see if you lost any coolant. Check the coolant before the ride.

if you do a lot of slow technical riding maybe a cooing fan is something to think about

after doing some research, seems like a very common problem, and it seems no one knows the true answer lol, some say its the factory exhaust too restrictive, other thermostats needs replacing, may need a fan.
Normally it doesn't loose any coolant..

If you overfill the coolant in the FE, and that means any more than just covering the rad grid inside (use a flashlight) then it will abruptly eject some from the overflow hose, which , if routed correctly will pour it down behind the front downtubes and into the bash plate... Check and see the level when cold. If it is just covering the top of the metal tubes, then you're good. I have a fan, which works but never comes on and I ride slow technical in British like conditions. I have the standard thermostat for it, and a spare part designed to turn it on at earlier. I've never installed it, as it has never needed it. Mostly, I think the riders that do that are the Aus/souther Us riders where temps are an issue.

Hi all,

Do the newer bikes have a weep hole? If so it may be a water pump seal if you couldnt see where it came from. My 650 did the same thing.

Cheers.

Coolant expands 6-10% by volume when it warms up.
If you start with absolutely full radiators, some will have to be ejected as it gets hot.
After it cools down, check the level, it should be over the rad tubes, but not right upto the cap.

From the Original post, I would guess its just expansion volume and nothing to worry about.

If you keep topping it up to the rad cap, it will spill coolant every time it heats up. Let it find its 'happy place' and it will be OK.

Don't mean to jack this thread but is there a torque spec for the coolant bleed screw on the top of the head. I have put about as much torque on mine as I want to and it still weeps. Should I anneal the crush gasket or buy another they have to be pennies right.

6 N-m. As per repair manual and owners manual.

You can anneal the copper crush wahser, but not too hot or it could melt (hot flame and small washer gets hot fast).

If it's leaking check the bolt closely for damage as it is a special bolt with some small holes drilled in it.

Thanks Mate. I sourced a new one. She's dry for now which is a lot more than I can say for our area in general, nothing like Oklahoma or Texas though. But 27 days with precip. out of 31 in May. Anybody make a snorkel kit and flotation tires for these.
