coolant in the oil!

I've got problems with my 2005 Fe550, the bike stopped running and after draining the oil found a lot of emulsion from presumably the coolant leaking into the oil. The coolant level was very low. I've taken the engine out of the frame to work on but can I just look at the head gasket and possible warped head or should I check other things while I'm at it. There was no oil or coolant coming from the waterpump seal but I had recently replaced it. How much in the UK would a rebuild be to refresh the whole engine?

Wooooooooh boy, slow down a bit. Don't go rebuilding your engine just yet.
Most likely cause:
1. wp seal
2. water jacket o ring in left sidecover
My money would be on the wp seal but the o ring in the side cover can leak if the gasket gets in the way during assembly.

Can only be 2 other possibles.
1. Head gasket - but unlikely to be if it's been untouched for some time - they aren't a common problem.
2. O ring around cylinder liner - even more unlikely than head gasket.

Thanks for the advice, If it was the water pump seal would it not leak out of the small drain hole? It might be the O ring so I will take off the side casing and have a look and maybe torque down the head to 60nm.
Engine is now 3 years of racing old though and was considering a rebuild anyway.
I've had various problems with overheating and had a new head gasket fairly recently. It shouldn't be that again but maybe the guy who did it made a mistake or torque'd it wrong.
I even found coolant inside the exhaust headers when I removed them. I will re examine the easy stuff but maybe the overheating melted the cylinder lining O rings or warped the head slightly?

no oil or coolant leaking out of the weep hole l ???

i say it is not the w/p seal or o' ring .

unless the weep hole is blocked !

Yeah if the weep hole was clear it would leak coolant out.
I trail ride with mine and I had the wp seal go. The weep hole was full of mud and so it filled up the oil.
I don't know what you're using it for - I was just listing things from most to least likely.

Hey Guys,
New to these Berg animals, I've read this post, can someone give me a heads up on what / if anything to look out for...where is the weep hole you're talking about..?

I've come off KTMS and Husky's (4T) and my bike is a day or two from being delivered (04 550 FE) so I've undertaken an intense learning curve...would appreciate any help...

Cheers...Corey

Hi I have a 2004/05 550Fe and have worked through quite a few problems with it. I now know the bike better than any other I've owned and reassure you that they are pretty simple to fix. The bike is great and after the initial readjustment to the feel of it you'll never look back. The engine is an absolute gem.
The weep hole is similar to the KTM and is sometimes prone to weep as the water pump seal gets old. This isn't a major problem and is fixed quickly and cheaply. Watch out for problems of overheating in really tight going and don't boil it dry. The problem obove stemmed from a slightly warped head and blown head gasket but that doesn't seem like a regular issue.
More often the problems are with the starter motor and battery not being up to the job, both are upgradable but I'd suggest kick starting it from cold.
Enjoy your bike and make use of this site as it'll save you alot of time and money.

The weep hole is just forward of the waterpump, kinda hard to see past the hose fitting.

Thanks Guys
appreciate your input and I'll take it all on board...seems I've found the right place for tech info and opinions.

Ok, couple of other things...

a. I've got some great avice off some boys on an Aus forum regarding a coolant overflow/storage tank which I'll fit as well as a couple of other really helpful tips.

b. I've got a mate that has an 02' FE 400 and it's a pain in the backside to start....once hot,it's cool to use the electric leg...so what the deal with that, my exc 520 Which I owned from new was never an issue hot or cold, just hit the button and go.

Could I get some detail re a high kick starter upgrade and the right battery....also interested to know what motor oil you guys like...

My plan will be oil and filter clean and change every 500 for the engine, valves ajustments as per the manual, fork oil each 6 months and general pull down lube and tighten as per common sense... it worked well for the Kato, oil and filters are cheap engines aren't....

Suspension will be my next focus, on the 520 I found the rear with a touch extra pre load was awsome and I had a modifed shim stack in the forks and found them to be good for me and my style of riding....many suggested gold valves but to be honest I didn't need to go there....I'm wondering if the berg will be the same.

I've ridden a few and have always maintained that if I could have put my 520 motor into a berg chassis that I'd have the perfect trail bike for speed and agility....they handle like a cat on carpet...

One other thing while I'm thinking of it...I'd like Blue radiator shrouds, front fender and headlight...headlight and fender I've got nailed but what bike do I need to order from to get the blue shrouds and genuine decals to suit the aforementioned shouds..if anyone has part number or models I'd be obliged

Open to any and all thoughts...thanks heaps

Cheers

Corey
