converting the FE400 to an FC400

i hope i've got my models right but the difference between my FE with the '01' cam, the FE tailpipe and the dellorto against this: FC tailpipe, keihin FCR and '53' cam is immense!

it pulls hard from the bottom to the top, the roll on in 3rd is now the roll on in 4th and whereas i used to count for 6th to rev out it is now just something where i kick till i run out of gears.

the keihin smoothed the bottom end and i've refined the jetting enough to know that it is better than the dellorto at mid revs and restarting.

the FC tailpipe was on it for both cams so really i can't say. the thing to have done would be to have changed the cam with the old FE pipe still on it-then chnage to FC.

i bought the cam for £20 and the end can was £50 so i've not been robbed. i've kept the same small downpipes.

i'm designing my own needles at the moment and i may check out the rekluse and tall seat when finances allow. for the moment though i'm riding the bike that husey should have produced in 2000. it would have taken the lead in the market.

the cam stood me at just £20 ($35) and you have the problem long term of the valve tuliping. i would say if you want a cheap (initially anyway) mod this is it.

it's the only part that truly gave an increase in power. the keihin is resposive and the tailpipe lets it happen but probably doesn't MAKE it happen.

fitting was physically easy and i can save you a lot of hassle by saying the valves miss the pistons by 5mm (minimum clearance is say, 2mm) so you only need change the cam.

initially i had valve bounce. this was cured by making two changes at the same time. i had two problems a fortnight ago and the first was that dale's cam timing figures didn't add up for me. the second was that having cut the seats once before, the valves were now sunk a little further into the head and that makes the valve springs looser and lose their pressure.

i cured this by putting washers under each valve spring. i then re-timed the valves 'my way' to dales figures. so either the correct valve timing or the renewed spring pressure stopped the valve bounce.

the bike now goes like snot. as far as the timing goes there is a post called "valve timing's holy grail" here and near.

visually it's no different to the '01' cam in that both lobes need to be symetrically upright and the tips parallel to the top of the head.

it should bolt in correctly straight off. my problem of valve bounce probably wasn't the timing but the valve springs needing those washers. this suggestion came from dale.

go for it!

so if i replaced the cam, id hve to mess with the valves a whole bunch and switch all that around?

is the valve clearance still the same, 1/8th of a turn out, or is that changed too?

i don't think you need worry about the cam timing and valve bounce. that was me.

listen i had valve tuliping on the '01' cam so i will have to keep an eye on it for as long as i rev and race.

what i will say is that i and other '01' cam users have said that you have to keep the revs up on them, two stroke them, always in the right gear or the bike won't accelerate.

but with this cam i kicked up two in the box, dumped the throttle and just hung on. now you could NEVER say that about the Fe400e now could you. therfore i predict i may not rev the bike all the time and the tuliping could infact be less?

you're not going to do this are ya!!!!!! chicken!!! c'mon, i dare you to have a crack at it. there's a '53' cam on workshop shelves all over the USA.

i WANNA do it....maybe itll be my project for when i move down to cali?

whats the stock cam in the 02 (which i have, and i BELEIVE you have the same...)? so you changed form stock, to the 01 cam, now to the 53?

how much did you have to take apart to get in there, im not very engine proficient, but im learning, could i do it in a day with a seasoned vet. mech/rider guy?

im tempted mr.taff...very tempted indeed!

where did you get your cam...and are they hard to find for that price??
i always thought cams were $$$$$$

there's a lot there so:

the 01 cam is the standard cam
yep i think you could do it in 2 hours
set to TDC on the comp stroke, pull the rocker cover off, spin engine to both lobes facing up like micky mouses ears AND the camchain split link is now somewhere on the camwheel, pull the CCT out, camchain undone, hold camwheel and unbolt cam as well as remove decomp and start the reverse process.

cheap? i reckon they should be laying around? SM riders or lineweaver customers may have them used.

i know that twist has got one in australia (least i think it's twist?).

are there any special tools i should get a hold of for that cam chain link? so i dont loose a peice into the engine like i almost did last time i got in there? (its the was the top a screwdriver.... )

i emalied motoxotica about prices, but i think ill give someone else a call who lives up near me and seems to have endless berg parts (racers, they get all the cool stuff! :x )

the main mod i wanna do to my berg, is put a 650 engine in it! hes even got a few of THOSE laying around

ill pay him a visit maybe tomorrow!

like i said there are people probably reading this thread with either a used '53' or a '55' cam so just keep looking.

ask Lloyd (AKA supermoto husaberg) if he wants to get rid of his. he has one spare. like i said, supermoto and flat track boys need genuine BHP so even a 53/55 cam wouldn't be strong enough.

go on dare ya!!!

Taffy

F-I-H surfer that's twice or three times you've missed the figures. "the standard cam is an '01' cam".

the thread "holy grail......" is dedicated to cam timning and DL indicates that the '55' cam is 5 degrees retarded from the '53' cam.

this should answer your questions so go for it now!!!!!!!!!!
