con rods

I thought it best to start a new thread on this topic :D

The KTM 450 using the plain bearing, as Bushie posted,
from what I can tell is running on a 35mm pin same dia pin as later/ 2003? up to 2008 Husabergs.
The concept is nice in that the weight saving on the big end would be considerable.
The bearings I see are not available without the rod, there is always a catch
A custom rod would be necessary not sure how long the KTM one is but it would
be to short for the 628cc Husaberg.
The 35mm plain bearing would be IMO a bit small anyway for a larger engine 628cc +
But there are plenty of other plains of larger dia that might do with a larger pin, possibly
a stepped pin.
Weight saving on the big end would mean the counterweights could be lighter,
less strain on the crank, might not wont lighter crank for enduro work, but might
be helpful for road use.
Something more to think about :!:

Oh and I see now MX Composites do custom rods :!:

Hi Spanner

those shells look like RC8 main bearing shells ?

surely we can get some without buying the rod

great ideas there and superb to finally see a "modern" production dirtbike with a plain bigend

The 35mm BE might be a bit small for a large capacity 4 stroke.
The Super Duke 950 mains are 50mm Dia. 8O
There are plenty of car BE bearings in between that might be suitable though.
I wonder how much oil pressure can be got with a taller rotor and heavier relief
spring. KTM`s have two pumps. :?

im running my 10mm wide pump at 35psi

stock was about 20

you'd think that a 50% increase in width with the KTM ATV pump would easily allow 55 - 60 PSI

road bike engines would be the place to look for comparisons -- i'm thinking 1198 ducati

Hi Bushie,
That is not to bad an oil pressure, as rule of thumb with cars is 10 psi/1000 rpm works,
should be ok to 6000 rpm then
How have you mounted your pressure gauge?
Had a look a the ducati big end bearings, and it seems they are not without
problems either.
To get a decent size main bearing diameter it may be nessacary to add some clearance
to the crankcase. Not sure what the max radius is before it hits the gear teeth. 8O
Found some 40 dia x 19 long big end shells that might do. :D
40mm pin ground down on each side to fit the 35mm Husaberg flywheels, nice
shoulder to press up against, weld the pins ends and Bobs your mother`s brother
Just not easy to check/change the bearing once assembled
One advantage in not having a equiped workshop at hand is it gives me a lot of time to think
about ****

Cheers spanner

pressure gauge was mounted on the oil filter cover

I reckon the surface area of half the big end has to float on the oil pressure so the diameter is also important

awesome idea, just need a 2 piece rod a bigger drive pinion on the crank or a hayabusa clutch basket , I also dream of jeanie
