Computer fans fitted and working fantastic

the electric brushless ducted fans for lil RC planes make those computer fans look like a nun breaking wind

dunno anyone whose used them yet but they are about the same price, huge CFM and low current drain, worth a look if soemone else is doing a fan setup.

do all these fans require a running through a battery first to stabilise the current?
i have no battery or starter motor in mine & tried to run 2 of these computer fans & they kept on stuffing up,so i got rid of them.

Yes, they are 12 volt fans. Gotta run them off the battery.
 
Question for you... I have just read this post with some interest and I noticed your bike (in the first pic)has a Bairnsdale KTM decal on the tank. So, did you travel all the way from Newcastle to pick your bike up from Bairnsdale?? If so ,WHY??
 
DC brushless fan motors also have a little Integrated Circuit (IC) in them to convert the DC to a form of AC. I would imagine the IC would not like the vibrations from off road tracks.

No, I bought it secondhand from a guy in Bega. I travelled all the way to Bega to pick it up. Wasn't too bad cause i used to live there and had a mate look at the bike before i handed over the cash.

I'm not too worried if the fans don't last too long but for $12 pair it was worth a try. all up the kit cost under $80 (temp switch was $55) which is still a mile in front of the genuine fan kit that KTM australia wants over $300 for. They wanted $127 just for the temp switch!

Very easy to do and only took a day to fit and wire up.

the $12 pair fans are rated for 106cfm (not sure how true that is but they blow a fair bit)

In auto mode the temp switch turns on the fans at 95 degrees and turns them off at 90 degrees
not waterproof but will see how they last (have a 5A fuse fitted just in case)
 
It just so happens I was thinking about doing this yesterday. Hooking up a computer fan.
I have the 05 650 and the dealer fan kit fits the 06-08 tanks. I didn't feel like upgrading to
tank, shrouds and fan kit just to get some air on the radiator so I took apart an old desktop
computer and removed 2 fans . One smaller and the bigger one. I am using the larger on which
is encased in a 3x3. So, I go out to the garage and set it up. I find a cool on and off switch,
some wire and crimp it in at the area of my flasher. Works great ! I haven't finished mounting
and exactly where they will be but I will make it custom and look good. I will need to wait as my
bike has no motor in it right now. It's getting some new gears right now.
My idea is to use the switch as needed it tight or hot conditions. And maybe not use it when I don't
think it's needed. Main thing is to remember to turn it off after shuting the bike down.

Wow, you guys are ingenious! I like the carbon fiber pipe guard and the clutch cover they look great. I got the short one from Hard parts. I have never had any problems with getting hot. Perhaps it's a climate thing.

I hooked up my computer fan today. I finished running the wire in heat shrink tubing also. I made a bracket that
attaches to my aluminum radiator guard. It is a tight fit where I wanted it to go so the entire fan blows on the radiator. I needed to round off a corner of the fan housing where it just does rest on the gas tank. Just to be sure
I also applied several (about 6) small patches of duct tape (that cannot be seen) on the area of the tank that touches.
I dcubt that it would ever have rubbed through but I like assurance. I will even check it later after a ride.
I also have a switch located up near the speedo clamped to my left blinker.
It works great.

I got the fan shroud to clear the tank by 1/4 inch now. I just needed think about it a little more.
I rounded off the shroud a little more, that's all. The fan blade still spins about a half inch away.

I've heard talk about installing the fans on the backside to suck air through which seems odd to me.
I installed my fan on the backside to blow air through the radiator
I would seem to cool down better that way, especially at very low speeds or at a stoplight.

Computer fan worked well this weekend.
Summer will be here soon so I brought a 1/2 inch drill bit home today.
Drilled out my cool Boss radiator guards in strategic areas .
I only messed up one hole a little. Got into the original cut out some :roll:

Street bike fans usually have the fan behind the radiator sucking air through.

All those engineers must know what they're doing. I would hope.

Also putting the fan in front blocks some air from getting to the radiator.

If it works...
 
yeah putting the fan in front of the radiator is poor practice as you are blocking air going into the radiator
much better to put the fan on the side of the radiator that the air exits and have it suck through the radiator

I'm not sure it matters where you put the flow restriction, upstream or downstream, its still restricts flow. Most cars these days have electric fans and they are mostly mounted in front of the radiators.

i would put mine behind the rad to reduce the chance of smashing it with a little roosted rock or stick
 
I made up a twin thermo fan out of two PC fans. Works really well when i connect it to the battery, just waiting on a thermo fan switch (100C on - 95C off) to arrive in the post before fitting it up neatly and adding some heatshrink, cable ties etc. I also stole the babies bottle coolant overflow off this Cooling System forum (complete with tube to hide the disney characters!) and applied it.
