i recently sold my 2000 fe400 no big problems, but t  ired of kicking). a very reputable and knowledgeable dealer told me to avoid the o1's and 02's and look for an o3.
is there any sense in waiting/ looking for an 04 over an o3? 400/450
is there a big performance difference and/or a reliability difference between 400vs.501 or 450vs.550? thanks, mikey

the '03 is worth waiting for but the 450 has a bigger kick and a clear and visible gain. the last three years of production have seen vast improvements although this year is a little more suttle.

if you do woods and not a hot rider the '03 400 is good to go. if you like the open spaces then the 450/550 are the biz.

i come 10/130 in enduros somedays and in england my tuned 400 (MX spec) is nigh on excellent. especially when it's sloppy. the guy in the next village who has a lot of experience syas the 450 made a big difference nd wasn't overly powerful.

if you click on the info sheet at the foot of this post you'll get a basic idea of the updates over the last few years.

regards

Taffy

400 and 450 are short stroke motors with a revvier nature than the longer stroke 501 and 550. 501 and 550 have a torqier traditional 4 stroke power (Still plenty snappy compared to an XR though). 450 and 550 are bored out and hopped up versions of the 400 and 501. The 400 and 501 have smoother power than their replacements. 03 and up are more debugged, although a late 02 with updated rockers and balancer isn't much different than an 03. Be sure the updates are done and done by someone who knows what they are doing. Sometimes this information can be difficult to obtain making the 02 a bit of a risk although the price will be right making an updated 02 a sleeper of sorts. Electric start was marginal on a 550 til the larger starter motor was installed in 04.

Kokusan ignition system, other rocker arm bearings -04. There are more things. The SEM system is as it is.
Check the manuals at Husaberg.se and you will see what service life the different parts have.

thanks for the replies. taffy, i'm not sure where ely is, but my son spent several years at mildenhall and lived in cambridge. we visited several times but i only got to one cy
cle shop--dumb...
ds sucati:
do you usually deal with premier? that's where my oo 400 originally came from. also, who is selling these "new, unused" 02's and 03's in tonopah, az? is this guy straight and reputable? any idea where the bikes are comiing from? they are on Cycletrader. thanks, mac

Mikey

you tell your son that i was at beck row last night coaching gymnastics as an after school club to the children there. 50/50 english/american.

you can't hear lessons for the jets and all you can smell is parraffin (kerosene to you).

ely is just 8 miles away.

you have jogged my memory...i think i went through ely, is there a big church there?
another question, i know 01 and o2's are to be avoided, but what about an o2 470 with the updates? isn' this just aa different sized piston from a 400 or a 450? the dealer told me they got rid of the 470 because of the 450 class for supermotard racing.
i know this isn't your bag, but i'd still like to know about the guy in tonopah, ariz. selling several berg's out of a storage shed (in his pics).
wish i had known you were there in 2000, i'd have bought you a pint of murphy's... slainte.... mac

yep mikey, ely has a big church-we just call it a cathedral that's all! :D :D i believe you'll find it on the front cover of pink floyds 'division bells' album from 1999.

now that '03s are down in value i'm sure that some here will say 'aviod' the '02s but remember they have feelings too and wouldn't like to hear you say that!

i'm sure that at some point you have clicked onto the info sheet i have put together with help from the lads here at the site. it has a lot of info and you canb go directly to what you want to change and have change in your pocket.

here in the UK we imported a **** load of USA 470's and knocked them out real cheap. i guess we don't mind shitting on our own feet here do we mr clarke

yes the difference between the 400 and 470 is in the bore and the bike is very quick. i would still recommend it on the 'cheap in and cheap out when i sell it' basis.

and i drink adnams or greene king ipa btw!

an updated one sounds like great value and here in the UK we tend to look at good value and bargain over relaible and good.

good luck

Taffy
