What are you intending to do with the paint? Are you going to do some small hand touch up, chips etc., spray a part/section of the frame, completely repaint the frame or perhaps paint your truck/trailer to match your bike?
if you go to a small garage that does bodywork (and knows and trusts you) they will lend you their flip charts to have a go for yourself at a match. if the man who knows what he is doing comes with the cards then all the better!
some of the bigger paint manufacturers may even now do motorcycle flip cards.
i've twice borrowed flip cards and found the correct colour.
I did some touch-up and tried Dave Clark's (UK importer) advice: "Rover Pageant Midnight Blue" (so exotic!!!)
This colour was close but not quite a perfect match for the '03 frame. You can notice the repainted area because it is a touch too light.
Later, my local Husaberg guru told me that the best colour would be 'Ford Tractor Blue'. He recommended popping down my local farm equipment store and just asking for it. I haven't tried this yet though.
Your talking about my profession now. You may find a clor chip thats close, have the code mixed up and then you would probably need to do a little tinting. Various colors may be needed to achieve a real close match. Many colors have several toners in the formula Usually you stick with those toners for tinting adding a little more or less.
many automotive paint stores that deliver paint and materials to body shops do color matching also. They usuall charge and added fee of say 20.00 to match a color. What they need though is a part to match and usually larger than just a bolt. I can't think of one now on the frame but you might even be able to9 take the bike there to match. I would say many of these stores are right on. They mix up colors and match all day.
