Does she start with the button, from stone cold ?

My 01 470 always starts on the button as long as the temperature is above freezing. If I am camping at the track and it is colder than that I drain the oil and keep new oil in a warm spot, then add before I start and no problem.

I guess the 15w/40 is too heavy for freezing temps.

KTM recommends 20W50 oil. This could be a hint of that they are more concerned about operating temperature wear than the cold start wear. That Husaberg recommends 5W50 for MY01-03 could be a cold start issue. The 5W50 oil is less stabile than a 20W50. It will shear down more quickly.

However, my friend with a FE450-04 had problem last year. It didn’t start cold. After he changed the electrical system the starter spins much faster and it starts very easy. He fitted a full wave regulator from –03 and changed the stator as recommended for KTM. He has also disconnected the remaining electrical system. It seems that the original system isn’t powerful enough to keep battery properly charged or there are some “leakages” in the electrical system. Nevertheless, the electrical system is still too weak in general.

Hey Mackberg.....
Are you A School Teacher
Your always telling us lazy old sods off

You wanna know why, we want our loved ones to start off the button from cold......

Well, the answer is ...

Wait for it ....

Are you still waiting ....

The Kickstart's on the left .... we don't like it there. :D :D

i've finally figured out that on my 02 470, she'll start off the button right away if the switch on the right grip (I assume its the ignition mapping switch) is in the "H" position. If its in the "L" position, no amount of cranking will bring it to life

I haven't really tried to hard to kick it yet. A few years back I broke my left hip in several places and have a bad leg as a result. No way can I kick it with my left leg, perhaps if I stand on the other side and kick with my right I could do it, but I haven't been motivated to try so far

Just an FYI: The 2004-2005 repair manual states to use 5W/40 below freezing and 10W/50 above freezing. This differs from the prior recommendation of 5W/50 for all conditions.

I'm still using Royal Purple 10W/40 with no ill effects. The only problem with it really is that it is black which makes it hard to see the metal flakes. Most are just aluminum anyway which is no big deal. l need to find a magnetic drain plug though.

Damn! And here I was thinking that EVERYONE ELSE had it wrong.
Cheers Ice.

kick start

ciao,

I kick start always. Even when warm.

After 3 weeks standing in the garage, with about 14C outside,

it took 5 kicks without choke, and then 2 kicks with choke and HI position and started great.

For me that is ok.

I only use the kick as well but the E-start worked with a full charged battery. Now I only use AC to get as much power I can to the light system.

Has any one any idea of why it should be better to have the ignition switch in position HI? What function has the blue wire to the ignition coil?

Goddag !

I only put in on HI cause the manual said so..... :D

Starting and hard conditions....

Sunday I took Husaberg out for a 47km run, and once in the "bush" it stalled, and because it was a bit of a climb, I buttonit to life !!!! Nice experience and it worked.

Home I came with a smile on my face through the wine and olive gardens in a settling evening sun,,,,,

My 04 650 supermoto starts on the button everytime. I always drain the carb after a race meet and next time I want to start it I just 'pump' the throttle twice press the button and away she goes..Another advantage... if I stall it going into a tight turn during a race (I need a slipper clutch) then I just prod the button and its running again before my foot touches down.
The bike is always plugged into a battery conditioner between meets.
I've lost count at the amount of guys I've lapped, struggling to kick their bikes over after an off or stall...ironically, most of them originally had electric starters and removed them to save weight

With the light ends evaporating so quickly out of fuel, draining the carb is a good idea for a quick start. I seldom remember to drain the carb and then after the bike sits for a week or two it takes a few kicks or a bit of E cranking to start her. I don't like the wear the E cranking puts on the auto decompressor, so I let it crank 3 rounds or so with the manual decompression lever pulled slightly in to prime it and then release the lever and it pops right off. Can't take credit for this tip, Peter at HMS passed this one onto me.

Hey Guy's
Having started this thread, i find it amazing the way we all seem to have different cold starting techniques considering were all on Husaberg s.
However, due to all the tips and advice shared on this site, it will help me and many others in the future to 'get our loved one going' on a cold and frosty morning.
Thanks

Ady

Hey Guy's Again.
Bike back from dealer - everything repaired.
New battery fitted - Aero CTZ7S £50 (the Yuasa equivalent).
Told to use Super Unleaded petrol all the time.
Have decided not to use button at all when cold, she kicks off second or third go. Off the button everytime from warm..
Hopefully my starting problems are solved.

Hey Ady,
Happy riding to you. Treat this as a lesson learned. Now the bike starts well off the kick and on the button when it's warm. As designed!!! Hope you have a great time riding.

Best regards,

Mackberg :D

Thanks Mackberg (Sir)

All the best..
Ady
