code for CAM bearings

Before i open the engine for replacing the cam (thanks to Taffy), i need to know the bearing code of the cam bearings, can somebody tell me that ?
Bike is 02 400FE

I just ordered 4 of them.

The code is:

6201 / C3

You´ll only need 2 of them! :wink:
But I think you already knew that.

There is an upgrade on this from KTM, I just replaced mine and when I called the dealer they have new type of Bearings from KTM, I can check the number on them they are now sealed with Vitol as I understand
 
Now it says 6201 LU and JR2CS22

Is a sealed bearing the best way to go for this application? I should think we have good oiling in this area and a sealed bearing may not be the best .
Any comments from the experts for us mortals.

we had a intense discussion in the german forum about this topic.
I heard that KTM recommends an upgrade to this sealed bearings.
My first thought was that this must be rubbish.
Yes Bobzilla, you´re right, the area around the camshaft bearings is really oiled well.
But KTM means that the filth particles in your oil shouldn´t come in contact with your balls (from the bearing).... :)
so they use sealed bearings.

6201 C3 2RS

But my opinion is still that there´s really no technical reason for that.
A sealed bearing is filled with grease. But the bearing is getting warmer because of friction and the grease could become fluid and maybe runs out....
Maybe it lasts the same time, but the costs are a bit higher.
Maybe KTM purchases these bearings for a lower price in quantities about 100000 pieces...
I don´´t know.
I wouldn´t "upgrade" may engine with that.
 
I will test them for 50 hours and then take away the sealings and se if there is any grease left. I have had problems before with the old type of bearings on both the 600 and 400 so I will be back with some comments

I'm about to pull my 650 partially apart for a bit of a freshen up, at 160 hrs. A new cam chain, roller followers and DVSK from Taffy and a new weephole kit from OrangeBerg.

Might as well swap the cam bearings while I'm in there too.

What is now considered the way to go with the cam bearing (6201C3) seals? When I did my 501 years ago, pre UHE, I decided to leave the outer seals in place to allow the bearings to get oil splash from the valve gear and retain some of it. I'll probably do the same again unless someone has a better idea.

mine were full of oil i pulled the seals off to look

on ktmtalk the big borers are finding the bearings last longer with the seals in place, oil gets through but not any snotty bits from the rest of the engine

so i have seals in place but without them is probably ok too.

Pulled the head this afternoon and the cam bearings seem as good as new, with seals in place, so i might just leave them as is. Will change the follower bearings though as I've been stung by them before in my 501, albeit the older type, and I need to strip the rocker cover anyway to do the DVSK.

The cam chain was endless so I packed it up with rags and ground the pin peening on a link with the Dremel and a grind stone. I bit of a wash with Brake Cleaner and it should be OK to rotate through with the new IWIS in a day or 2 when I get back to it.

Found the standard DID cam chain with 3 clicks of adjustment left, and FWIW the clicks seem to be 1 mm each and it was at 17 mm with the last click at 20 mm. The chain certainly felt 'sloppy' on the cam sprocket.

With the jetting setup, which I shall report on later, there is no carbon buildup at all, and a finger wipe on the soot in the combustion chamber is all that is required to see an aluminium sheen, nice. Might even put a fresh plug in it, which would be the third to date.

defo seals in steve.

you lose about a half of the clicks on simply putting it together with the old blades. a modern blade is about 2 clicks or none! you actually have to force the tensioner into the block and bolt it up quick!
