close ratio gearbox

it seems you haven't been telling the truth you lot!

you promised me that the close ratio gearbox amounted to no more than dropping in the 6th gears from the old FC470 and that was that!

but you lied!

when i went to measure up the box today from a 2000 FC501 i ran out of fingers! i got confused as i wrote down numbers that didn't add up from the doc.

ok, so lets start again! as you know, the gearbox reads
INPUT AHEAD OF OUTPUT.

that the gears read from left to right:
1 - 5 - 3 - 4 - 6 - 2

the gears as presented in recent times are

............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....14....24....19....23....27....17
output:...33....22....26....25....20....30

but the 501 had the following:
.............1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input;....15....24....20....23....25....18
output;..32....22....25....24....21....28

on the MXer:
first is much, much taller
second is much taller
third is ever so slightly taller
fourth is ever so slightly taller
fifth is exactly the same
sixth is shorter and the gears 25 and 21 are well known to us from the doc.

i don't know why it hasn't shown up before but it's a great disappointment. maybe "they" weren't aware that to fit taller bottom gears can just about have the same effect as a load of shorter top end gears.

i'm sure DrC and any other RR boys as well as SM boys would be very, very interested in this information.

this will go in the doc. under tuning.

I expect, in the near future, a Chinese Husaberg clone," reverse engineered" in its entirety, by none other than Taffy.

you know, i look back over the past 12 months here and i can't believe the stuff we've learnt about these bikes! more now than at anytime in the past.

power now
motion pro
honda needle
this gearbox
clog decomp
barrels
valve spring kits
R6 starter motor
spigot stuff
as for main bearings - we're just about there
even rocker cover leak cures
carb plate probs -rubber seal
fuel valve leak

the list is endless.

Yes, it does look promising! I plotted the ratios to compare the two alternatives with my existing gearbox. The company behind the Husaberg gearbox, Folan, is situated 10km away from home. He provided me with a slightly lower 5th gear, which made the 3-4-5-6 fit very well with my power band. The "FC" box seems even tighter!

and you didn't know either! what hope have we got if you didn't know ya turnip!

thanks for the graph. it'll be in the doc soon.

Like the most of you, I have just settled with the fact that the enduro/motard gearboxes had an "overdrive" 6th. Sorry about not meeting up to your high expectations!

Have this been confirmed with different article numbers?

Ha! ha! i'm only pulling your leg! but you have to admit that you are a 'little nearer the factory 'ear' than we are!

i have the two sets of gearboxs here. if there is anything you want to know then please ask! i have told takis of this also. this gearbox would be perfect for him (AKA BERGOROADRACER) as he is a street drag racer!

fact is, would you want to mix either of these boxes up? as a man that did road racing for 14 years i know that a close ratio box was better everywhere.

ok have a chuckle, i bought what i hoped was a CR box from a FC501 being broken on ebay and it isn't the same!

here are the ratios:

............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....13....25....20....23....25....17
output:...34....22....27....24....21....30

here's the usual box
............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....14....24....19....23....27....17
output:...33....22....26....25....20....30

and the other 501 had the following:
.............1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input;....15....24....20....23....25....18
output;..32....22....25....24....21....28

checked another box last night and it was as per the latest one but with the traditional 6th gear as well.

another '00 but FE400

............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....13....25....20....23....27....17
output:...34....22....27....24....20....30

purchased '00 FC501 'box
............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....13....25....20....23....25....17
output:...34....22....27....24....21....30

here's the usual box that we all have from 2001 on...
............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....14....24....19....23....27....17
output:...33....22....26....25....20....30

and the other FC501 had the following CR 'box:
.............1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input;....15....24....20....23....25....18
output;..32....22....25....24....21....28

Mat

ANYBODY

can you enlighten me as to what all these boxes are meant to be from?

a graph again when we're done Mat?

did you have an english roadracer contact you mate?

as i'm aware through reading here - yes they have. Dr_C has had a special primary gear made i believe (was that with a different clutch ring as well?).

the mystery is over:

a '00 but FE400
............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....13....25....20....23....27....17
output:...34....22....27....24....20....30
= STANDARD WR 6-SPEED BOX

purchased '00 FC501 'box
............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....13....25....20....23....25....17
output:...34....22....27....24....21....30
= STANDARD WR 6-SPEED (AS ABOVE THEN) BUT WITH A CR 6TH GEAR FITTED BY OWNER

and the other FC501 had the following CR 'box:
.............1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input;....15....24....20....23....25....18
output;..32....22....25....24....21....28
= 4-SPEED OR 6-SPEED CR BOX

here's the usual box that we all have from 2001 on...
............. 1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input; ....14....24....19....23....27....17
output:...33....22....26....25....20....30

and here is another one available back in '99 and it's called 6-SPEED S-WR
.............1......5.......3......4.......6 ......2
input;....15....25....20....23....27....18
output;..32....22....25....24....20....28
IT HAS THE FIRST 4 GEARS FROM THE CR BOX BUT THE LAST TWO ARE FROM THE WR BOX.
a look at those 5th gear ratios and you wonder whether in the 25/22 and 24/22 if they didn't use the same 22T for both?

regards

Taffy
