checked my valves according to the manual...after putting it all back together had a look & rekon i could do it next time in 1/2 the time/hassel ...
by, 1,take off seat 2,take off llhs rad cover 3,dissconected lhs rad (after draining some of the coolent)
this should be enough access to get the rocker cover off to check the vlaves...
u guys probly know this allready,,but if u dont mite be handy

hey fakesy, ive not attempted mine yet but will be doing very soon. Is it a daunting job or easy once you've done it a few times ?

Its a simple job, but if you've got shovel hands like me you'll skin a knuckle or two.......... definitely go for the 1/6 or 1/5 turn method rather than try and contort the feeler guages.

im not mr mechanic, but when uv been shown/done it once peice of pi$$ really..wish id taken pics & could of posted it step by step,,,will do next time

Hi Fakesy

i would go for 1/8 turn for best hot start and be sure that cam stand i the right position. take care :)

I did the 1/8th turn as spec'd in the doc. Never done it before. Got TDC 180 degrees in the wrong place but mate put me right before I went too far. If you cant feel any slack at all in the tappets, this is probably what you've done. Other than that, quite easy.

Specialist tools - have a look at my gallery - kiddies brush for finding TDC - Ikea allen key for inspection covers without removing rad - cranked screw driver through ring spanner to keep adjustment screw in correct place when tightening up (true mechanics turning in their graves) - manual to hand - coffee - and pick a time when it's not not too late to "ask Jeeves" or should that be "ask Taffy".

That's how I see it and what happeed to me. Sounds a bit "mickey mouse though..." perhaps someone could offer a more technical guide (not too technical though).

the right TDC point is where all the valves shake a bit and are not steady, right?

is there not 2 dots/markers that should line up?

Hi Fakesy,
Yes on our models, the two dots line up on camchain, but i think the other posters may be talking different model and year bergs. Dunno if they vary.
Did you watch Jason do yours in the workshop at Tewkesbury?

Cheers,
Nick

nope,,mate of mine local, handy on the spanners,,he showed me..

Fakesy,

Yes the others are talking about the pre '09 models.
You even don't have to drain the the coolant liq. All I do is take out the two M6 bolts that hold the left radiator in place and move the rad. forwards.
I have a very nice and sleek 1/4 wrench set from TengTools and with this it is quit easy to take off the four bolts holding the rocker cover. But after 7500 kms on the two oldest bikes (I have four & started using the first two in December) it still wasn't necessary to change the play.

hope this is of any help,
Adrian
