Charging System

Hey anyone...I have a 14 FE501 and I’m questioning my charging system. I purchased the bike used, all seemed good with the bike. I’ve put about 15 hours on it since I’ve owned it over this last year. The battery was a bit weak and I have used a battery tender when I’m not using the bike. This winter the battery really was suspect so I just purchased new lithium battery. After starting the motor I disconnected the positive terminal and the motor immediately shut down. Any direction would be appropriated.

Hiya :)

I'm not sure that these bikes are supposed to keep running if you disconnect the battery. I'd be surprised if there was enough power generated at idle to keep the whole shebang going.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I’m thinking that is possible too. My buddy has a 480 Beta and after start up the engine works fine.
Any other comments or suggestions?

One other thing.... I just opened the side case to look at the alternator/stator and had about an ounce of oil run out. Is this normal or could I have a leaking crank seal?

Take the voltage of the battery disconnected Then hook the battery up and run the bike and check voltage. The voltage should be above 12.5 volts disconnected and anywhere between 12.8 to 13.5 running. This will tell ya if you have a charging issue.
This is the not the exact specs, but will put you in the right direction. Must be over 12.8 or ya wont charge. Load it up also, turn lights on etc and check with rpm up a tad to ensure it maintains the amp draw of the load.

Hope this helps :)
