charging problems

Hi every body and a happy new year. My bike is currently suffering post Christmas depression and has decided not to charge the battery. The DC out put to the battery is 8v and doesn't pick up with revs, similarly the AC volts to the head light are about the same 8vac, the lights are unsurprisingly very dim and take a second to come on once the switch is switched on.
i have done some ohms checks on the stator and the results are thus;
yellow to ground = 1 Ohm
white to ground= 1 Ohm
white to yellow wire =0 Ohm

To my mind this indicates a short in the larger of the two windings(on the white wire side) as the resistance should be greater from white to earth than yellow to earth. would any one agree with me on this? or am i barking up the wrong tree. the stator is the same as the KTM one shown in fig 2 of the AC to DC download, the bike is a fe550 08, and i think it was made on a Friday,
cheers,
Jockular.

forgot to ask, does anyone have any figures to test the stator and the voltage regulator?

Hi Jockular,

These stators were notorious for joints becoming unsoldered, check the soldered joints on the stator, particular the white this connection has two winding wires soldered to it..
Yellow feeds the lighting and white the charging.
Also check the AC output from Yellow to Ground and White to ground, should be up around 80vac

There is no test procedure to test the Reg/Rec. I reckon your problem will be a connection one.

Regards

Sparks.

Thanks Sparks, i have checked the solder joints and they are perfect, i refitted the stator and tested as you suggested, with the wires to the regulator diconnected i get upwards of 40 volts ac depending on rpm from the white and yellow, if i reconnect the reg and test i get 7-8vac, so i guess the regulator is shot. i have ordered the trail tech one and intend to to the dc conversion as discibed in the download. i will be able to fit better lights when i can afford it then.
cheers,
Jockular
