Chain wear

The chain on my bike 09 fe450 is worn quite badly, to the point that the clip on the split link is almost worn through!!
The only place that I can see where it's wearing is on the chain guide at the bottom by the rear sprocket. I'm new to dirt bikes, is this a normal wear and tear thing? Or do I have a problem?
The sprocket sizes are 14/52 and my thoughts are that the rear sprocket is too big too allow enough space for chain movement at the back there? Hence wearing quite quickly?
I don't know what the standard gearing should be either if anyone knows?
I have ordered a new chain already but now wondering if I should be looking at a different sprocket combination too? I'll probably need a new chain guide too.

This is the chain guide. As you can see it's quite close to the sprocket.

that rear sprocket looks to big to me....
The chainguard already is in the "biggest" position and almost no room does not seem right...
 
Yeah it does seem too big, it is the one that wasn't on the bike when I bought it. Only had it 3 weeks though.
The gearing doesn't seem too bad though, so was wondering about going to 13/48 as that would be very similar.
 
I use a 52 and have the same wear. Has worked fine for me the 160+ hours. A new clip is quickly grind down and then it stays like that. I really should fix whatever is grinding it down, don't know why I never bothered to find out....
 
How many miles are on the chain? Do you keep it adjusted correctly, including being certain that the rear wheel is lined up with the front? How often do you lube the chain? What type of chain lube do you use? What type of terrain do you ride in? Mud and sand are both rough on chains. Pros, which I'm not, replace their chains after every race. Don't replace the chain without replacing the sprockets - especially if you are using an aluminum rear sprocket. Your sprocket sizes are fine. You can change them, but understand that a smaller rear sprocket will result in a different gear ratio. The proper gear ratio depends on the type of riding you do, on your skill level, and on your preference in terms of the rpm change when you shift gears. I like to use rear sprockets that have aluminum inner sections and steel outer sections. Renthal makes one, as does SuperSprox. If you go to the SuperSprox website, you can purchase a chain and sprocket kit that comes with a lifetime warranty. Read the warranty before making the purchase - you still need to care for the chain properly. Good luck - ride safe and have fun! Jim Roble
 
I've only had the bike 3 weeks. The terrain I usually ride in is soft sand, so most people around here don't usually lube chains as the sand just sticks and acts more like a grinding paste. I can see that the wear is from that chain guide

Stock Chain guides are cheep the important one to Me are front swingarm and lower rear by sprocket. Try putting your masterlink with the clip on inside by the tire side paint the link easyer to see. Your sprocket size are OK. I'm using 14/48 a little high for the riding I'm doing on my 570FE. Buy all new sprockets of steel and a good O-ring chain. One Thing I do is soak the chain in oil for at least over night every 4 or 5 rides. For you know it all's brake an old no good O-ring chain open and you'll see rust or at lest dry if you don't soak them.

Keep your gearing and cut out some of the chain guide allowing for more room. Or get a TM design slide & glide. Always keep a couple extra mater links and clips with you. They always wear out faster than the chains. I run a D.I.D VT2 520, it's made a little narrower for enduro bikes with tight tolerances.
 
My FE570 did that with the factory DID chain and OE sprocket.

I have used a rivet link ever since.
